Schralp: Hate to be nitpicky, but I didn't write the text quoted above. I only asked a question, the text quoted was D'Arcy's, not mine.

SchralpTheGnar wrote:The best part of this system is that it attempts to nullify the people who cherry pick winter ascents only during prime weather conditions that are such a source of consternation amongst the winter finishers and it can be measured 100% accurately with simple weather and snow depth sampling data collected from GPS and satellite data.
Go ahead and start your own "system", just don't call it "Winter 14ers" you all need to look up the definition of winter. Urban dictionary has a good one.

Those who were the first decide on the criteria not some trolls on the internet. Most of you seem to think that those of us who have finished think its the most badass thing anyone could ever attempt, I don't think that's the case, it's simply something that gets us high in the mountains during the most beautiful time of year. If someone wants to cherry pick the good weather days and the good safe conditions, I say, smart man. Trying to come up with a system that puts lives in greater danger is irresponsible and ignorant, a thing of the past, I would hope. May the mountain gods have mercy on us all.

Dwight, did you really take SchralpTheGnar seriously? He, like myself, should rarely be. By the way, sincere congratulations on completing the 14'ers in winter.

Or maybe you were just playing along. I looked up the Urban Dictionary definition at your suggestion:

"Winter: One of four seasons, starting on December 21st, and ending on March 21st.
It is widely enjoyed by kids, due to activities such as Snowmen-making, Tubing, Snowmobiling, and Skiing.
However it is widely despised by anyone above the age of 16, due to activities such as scraping a car's windshield, dangerous driving conditions, and higher heating bills.
Plus it puts quite the damper on smoking outside.
Note: People who live in states such as California, Texas, Florida, etc., are usually shunned for complaining about this season."

Yeah, I wondered the same thing, but I did notice Schralp only has one snowflake to his name (although maybe he doesn't record all his winter ascents here), so I came away thinking that he at least abides by his own criteria -- it would be somewhat rare to climb a peak under the conditions he describes. (I also came away thinking he must be a good skier too.) I myself have only reached a summit once where the temperature hovered around 10 degrees for the day. It was in December at the end of year, and to eclipse 100,000' for the year I needed a summit and I wasn't going to let a little cold get in my way. But that does speak to the danger Dwight alluded to.

So far my definition of a winter ascent doesn't seem to be gaining much traction here, maybe it is ahead of its time. Tom, I edited the post to quote correctly, sometimes quoting the nested quotes and pulling out the relevant pieces to shorten it can be difficult, unlike climbing Bierdstat in March in 40 degree temps with light winds.

No worries, I understand. I'm just sort of sensitive to being misquoted on the internet, weird how comments can get legs and travel (although what was quoted was certainly not controversial, etc.). Many thanks, Schralp, I appreciate it.

sarcasm should not be used on the internet, it's a lot like fake news, some backwoods hick is always going to believe it. I'm starting to see some Russian influence here, Bill better look into it. Facebook is trying to alert us about suspected fake news, this site needs sarcasm alerts.
