The Cielo Vista Ranch, all 83,368 acres including Culebra Peak, is currently for sale at $105 million. Colorado brought in around $70 million from taxes paid on marijuana sales last year alone. It wouldn't be a stretch to use one year's worth of revenue from this new windfall of revenue for the state to purchase this historic property. They could then sell part of the agricultural areas to offset the total cost. Voila, Culebra is now public (at least state-owned).
Sorry, just California dreamin'....

Re: Culebra for sale for $105 million
Bumping this thread.
Just got off the phone with Ron. He informed me that there is a buyer for the property and the sale is currently in early stage negotiations. He doesn't have any info on whether the new owner would choose to allow access to Culebra, but he said that if the current sale goes through then this year's summer access (and of course future trips) may be shut down. So if anyone is looking to get this peak, now might be a good time to talk to Ron about opening up a few more days in the very near future if he's willing (I didn't ask).

This sale, like every time the peak has been sold or transferred, is a game of roulette--the owners may allow access and then they may not. In addition to hoping that access doesn't get eliminated, I also hope it doesn't get absurdly expensive to climb--not all of us are made of money.
I guess time will tell.

Every time the peak has been sold? Jeez, that has happened only twice in the past 50 or so years. And the only time access was completely denied was the time period when the Enron scum owned the property (97-04).Urban Snowshoer wrote:This sale, like every time the peak has been sold or transferred, is a game of roulette--the owners may allow access and then they may not. And the peeps that own the east side of the mountain (range) have NEVER allowed access.

I was wondering why they haven't opened dates for this summer. This prob explains it. I only have Lindsay and Culebra left and was going to hit them in June. Looks like I might be finishing on Lindsay either way. LOL

As far as I'm concerned, Culebra doesn't count as a 14er. If you want to climb one more mountain, either tag Grizzly, or do illegal things and don't talk about them.onebyone wrote:I was wondering why they haven't opened dates for this summer.
