Thanks everyone! I’m think g Wheeler will be the choice but damn, that’s a drive! I’ve yet to hike any peaks in Nevada and I have zero idea when I’ll get back there again so what better time than now? I’d I do go I’d try and tag Davis and potentially Baker as well then head back the next day and potentially head towards Handies Wednesday. According to Mountain Forecast the wind looks a bit rougher next week here and very pleasant there. I could be wrong though.

So, gas...looks like Delta is the last place before heading to Baker, correct? Is there cell phone coverage out there on 50?

Thanks again!

There’s a gas station right on the UT-NV state line - importantly, it’s on the Nevada side which means there is normal ABV beer :) Until then yes, Delta is your last stop for anything.

I don’t recall if there’s any cell service. If there is, it’s probably not very good. Either way I wouldn’t count on it.

Have fun!

the drive really wasn't that bad, pretty scenic, much better than expected. With a full tank I got from Delta down to Pioche or somewhere south of there towards Las Vegas. Cell reception was surprisingly decent, I had at least 3G near the mountain and campground. There is a large wind farm below the peak outside the park, and I believe some radio tower on Bald Mtn up there. Not sure about that stretch of 50 itself from Delta.

The famous gas station/motel/casino/bar is on the UT/NV line - which runs through the building as a line painted on the floor. No alcohol can cross the line.

I got hooked on those Nevada peaks - the basin/range topography is so different.

According to peakfinder, you've got peaks 170 miles away, like Provo peak, that might be visible on a clear day, but there's a lot of pollution and haze in the SLC valley, so i doubt they'd be visible.
The pollution gets trapped in the valleys so the mountain peaks are always above the haze line. A big forest fire may be an exception.
I'm old, slow and fat. Unfortunately, those are my good qualities.

Those pics are fantastic! I just discovered there is a WWII internment camp near Delta. Being a history nerd that almost makes the long ass drive worth it in itself. The only issues I still have with it is driving eight hours with nothing to do but listen to yacht rock radio on sirius and the thought of running into a rattler down low on the beginning of the trail. Yes, I’m a punk bitch with snakes.

the trailhead is at 10000+ ft, shouldn't be any rattlers (I'm terrified of them). It gets as cold as CO in winter, actually colder.
And definitely take the 1-2 hrs for Lehman Caves. It's one of the best I've been in with unique formations.

+1 - Lehman caves are pretty amazing and you shouldn't have to deal with snakes.

Good choice. Worth the drive. Inspiring place. I wrote a trip report back in 2011 for it. Hard to believe it's been that long. I've wanted to go back ever since.

Bald Mountain shares a saddle with Wheeler. It's a short side trip off the standard route. At 11,562 feet it is ranked #18 in Nevada. It offers a great view of Wheeler impressive face. There are ancient bristlecone pines in the cirque.

Did you hike Wheeler?

We're planning on being in GBNP next week to see Lehman Caves and attend the presentation by the "Dark Rangers".

We'll do the hike also if the weather is good. I'm concerned about the smoke/haze, I heard it was bad a few days ago.
