The Wildcat Trail is the only hiking trail inside the Tribal Park that visitors can hike unescorted by Navajo guides. It's less than 4 miles long and circles around the west mitten.

Thanks again everyone for the thoughts above.

We just came back. It was really cool and we got to fortuitously see full moon on a clear night.

Scott, thanks for the idea of Castle Valley - this looks real nice, though we'll have to wait until the next trip there as we didn't have enough time to go north unfortunately with only two days :-(

The valley drive road wasn't too bad, a few spots were a bit rough, but ok in a 2wd car (dry) with slower driving in the rougher sections.
