I lived in Canada for 3 years and while I did not do this exact loop, I did do the Skyline Trail in Jasper which is about 31 miles with 6500 feet of gain (I also tacked on a mountain in there which made it more like 8000 feet of vertical gain) in about 8.5 hours. I jogged the flats and downs.
2 days later I went and ran up and down Snowbird Pass (Mt Robson) which is many miles beyond Berg Lake. This was close to a 40-mile day with 7500 feet of vert. I did it in 9 hours jogging the flats and downs.
I am a middle of the pack endurance runner just for reference. These kind of things as day trips seem very normal to me. It is an awesome way to see a whole bunch of s**t in just a few days. One of the big reasons I always keep myself in mountain 50k shape.
I absolutely carried bear spray and bear bangers. Someone up there mentioned a gun. There is no chance as an American you are carrying a gun in one of their national parks....or anywhere for that matter. Bear spray and Bear bangers will do the job.

@colin j: I had my mind blown away already. Of course, the first time you don't pick a 35 mile loop when you can just drive the Icefields Parkway
