And while we're at it...
Mt Holy Cross, San Luis, Eolus: religious connotations
Sunlight and Sunshine: named after a mutagen?
Culebra: hey, snakes bite
Little Bear: are we making fun of vertically challenged bears?
Redcloud: isn't that what comes out of industrial smokestacks?
Mt Massive: glorifies this country's obesity epidemic
Castle: well, that's elitist

Re: Petition to rename Kit Carson
Several years ago a Denver talk show proposed naming a peak after Dave Sanders, the heroic high school teacher who lost his life trying to save students at the Columbine massacre in 1999. This is a stretch, but if the name Kit Carson retains negative connotations and historic data, here is some silver lining behind the dark clouds if a name change is appropriate here ... Dave Sanders Peak (or mountain).
Then too, there are many worthy unnamed 13ers to apply Dave Sanders' name to ...
Just two cents.

Re: Petition to rename Kit Carson
Clearly we all need to show our support for the current name of Kit Carson by all dressing up like Kit Carson and climbing the peak in a very public manor. Maybe we can get a news crew to document the whole thing. I think the blue cavalcade, cowboy hat, and fake moustache would look pretty goon on me! Well, maybe not on some of the women...

Re: Petition to rename Kit Carson
I vote no change. I mean, I bet we could get enough people from my home town (Chevy Chase, MD) to sign a petition to rename it because the comedian was not that funny to them, but why waste everybody's time and money? Leave it the way it is and we can all go about our own business.

Re: Petition to rename Kit Carson
I'm afraid you guys have the name change all confused. It has nothing to do with being all politically correct regarding Kit Carson. Since Crestone means the crest of a bird, or a cockscomb, the peak that towers over the town of Crestone, and looks like the crest of a bird, was called Crestone:

The people of Crestone have ALWAYS called KC Crestone because that's what it looks like. The last time I climbed KC, the Crestone Eagle had the story on the front page regarding the petition to change the name. It's still on the web here: http://www.crestoneeagle.com/archives2008/apr08_b1.html The people of Crestone are just trying to correct a mistake made years ago by some guy drawing a map and incorrectly labeling Crestone as KC.
That said, Crestone Peak and Mount Crestone sounds confusing and just plain dumb. Maybe Crestone North or something.

Re: Petition to rename Kit Carson
I agree that calling it Mt Crestone is a bad idea. Maybe the town name could be changed to Carsonville instead.

I have more age than experience, more experience than knowledge, and more knowledge than wisdom.

The Hayden Expedition / Survey in 1874 was 'some guy drawing a map'?gb wrote:The people of Crestone are just trying to correct a mistake made years ago by some guy drawing a map and incorrectly labeling Crestone as KC.
I don't know... seems to me it had many different names prior to that

The town of Crestone was officially established November 1880. The Hayden Survey named the peak in 1874..
