Yup, in a rented midrange SUV. So I didn't really care whether someone damaged it, and was at a point in life where I wouldn't have minded not being able to get back to Chicago for awhile.
I recall the USFS trailhead sign was on the ground broken into two or three pieces. But it was obviously the end of the road with parking for a few cars.

Not giving a crap can be a plus, at times. I'm tempted to just go up to Borrego Mesa, park, and hike. Idk if I'll do it, though. Maybe I should st least try calling the guy for permission. Shouldn't hurt, really.
