Added bonus of not having to mess with private property! At least mostly, maybe a few questionable trailheads depending on the area?

Re: 2025 Goals
Talk about a dream -- this is on my list to do in the next decade. Any fun variations on the "normal" route? Assume you've seen the Across Utah website? I was thinking myself that I'd rather finish in the Grand Canyon with a big circumnavigation than hoof it to Zion. But I'd also likely do a fall hike so the temps wouldn't be atrocious.
For 2025 myself:
--run consistently all winter & spring / get to race weight
--vestal center shift & ellingwood arete with my trad dad (pre-monsoon)
--repeat snowdon's west buttress a bunch for time and fun (and sleep on top of it once pre-monsoon)
--leadville 100 in august
--some sort of biggg peak traverse in september (sangres are the most inspiring)
--snag a few more bicentennials
--turn my eyes towards leading more rock and technical canyoneering when the alpine gets cold and snowy
one step at a time // you are exactly where you need to be in this moment

Yes, a fair amount of alternates...going across the Baker route instead of hiking the bushwhack of the Escalante River, 4 Mike Wahweap, Under Tarantula, and a few more. I have seen Jamal's website, Across Utah, and have spoken with him several times. His site is an excellent resource. If you find yourself doing it, feel free to contact me if you have questions/helpzootloopz wrote: ↑Tue Jan 14, 2025 10:00 amTalk about a dream -- this is on my list to do in the next decade. Re: 2025 Goals
I'm a bit late joining in, but this has been a crazy busy year so far.
Since I moved back to Colorado around Thanksgiving, a smattering of goals for the next 10ish months.
-5 14er repeats (didn't do a single one last year)
-5 new-to-me 13ers
-at least a dozen other 12k or 13k summits, fine if repeats
-at least two half-marathons (I only did a small amount of light jogging last year since I was traveling fanatically during my final semester of grad school)
-get a big girl job again, so that I can go from 4 jobs down to 3
-travel to at least one new-to-me nation
-visit the Daks and snag a couple more of the 46, maybe even tag Washington and Mansfield if I have time
-read 25+ books
-continue building up my published writing portfolio
-attend at least two writing conferences
-get down to NM to hike Wheeler with mopphares!

Re: 2025 Goals
Post winter check-in: It was a pretty low peak count winter for me (only 5 peaks total, including 1 repeat) but my top goal was to have some great adventures and I crushed that one!
1. Have some great adventures in the mountains! Absolutely epic experiences doing the Crestones and Little Bear West Ridge Direct this winter!!
2. Chip away at and maybe even finish lap 2 of the 14ers (10 more to go). Didn't make any progress on this over the winter but still plenty of time for chipping away...
3. Get more 14er snowflakes (including Crestone Needle). YES!! Got the Crestones and Little Bear!
4. Get a snowflake for Capitol (this encompasses all 3 goals above). Not in the cards this past winter (conditions didn't line up) but I now feel much better prepared for an attempt next winter.
5. Continue to level up my winter climbing skills (encompasses all 4 goals above). YES! Between the Crestones and LB West Ridge Direct I hit some class 4 and class 5 sections this winter!
6. Do more 13ers of any flavor in any season. Got one more - still time for plenty more during the rest of the year...
7. Try to finish fleshing out the West Ridge Indirect route up Little Bear. Made a slight bit of progress already by visiting the upper portion of this on my winter climb via WRD.
8. Keep filling in calendar grid slots (esp. Longs, Grays/Torreys, Bierstadt). Checked off a February Bierstadt grid - still have a little March left for maybe something else...
9. Try to be less of a hermit hiker (~60% solo hikes in 2024; try to drop below 50%). Mixed results so far - got a couple hikes done with partners (plus a couple partly partnered hikes) but lots of solo as well.
Overall, I'm very satisfied with the quality, if not quantity of the winter climbs I did (some epic days this winter...) and I feel I'm well positioned for hopefully a good year ahead!

Re: 2025 Goals
CDT (northbound) in 100 days.
I'm trying to find the right balance between challenge and "enjoyment". Planning is in full-swing and though I've spent a fair bit of time over the past 30 years in the mountains on various adventures, I've never thru-hiked. It should be interesting!

Re: 2025 Goals
The year is 1/4 over and it has been somewhat depressing for me. I am behind on almost all goals. I've also had bursitis in my elbow which means I haven't been able to any technical climbs at all lately. It is getting better though. My plantar fasciitis has also been bothersome, but not debilitating.
I could really use some partners for some easy technical stuff if anyone is interested.
On reason my peak count is so low so far this year is that my son and I spent almost a month in Uganda/Rwanda and I only managed successful ascents of two peaks. I really underestimated the difficulty and conditions of the peaks in the Rwenzori! We did a lot of other activities though. Still, I did a lot better last year by this date than this year.

Holy Nolan’s as a trio! Excited to see what we can pull off.

Re: 2025 Goals
I'm feeling pretty good about where I'm at so far:
HikesInGeologicTime wrote: ↑Wed Dec 04, 2024 6:33 pm 1. Finally finish my f---ing podcast (or at least get it caught up to the present day)
Work in progress
2. Get through at least the first draft of one of my other creative ideas, esp. after I'm done writing new material for the above
Actually managed this while I was taking a break from my podcast! Excited about going back to it, but podcast first.
3. More skiing
41 lift-served days so far this season, plus another few non-lift-served skinning days, plus one fourteener, which was...
--3a. In particular, a ski descent of Mt. Elbert, which I have attempted to ski twice now and (perhaps obviously) been foiled both times
BOOYAH, as the kids used to say back when I used to be one! This was hands (and sometimes other body parts)-down the roughest Big Peak ski I have done to date, but at least it is finally done!!!!
4. Keep working physical therapy exercises on my bum foot. 100% restoration of pre-accident functionality is a physical impossibility, but more pain-free days and being able to sustain longer hikes/AT routes without wanting to use an ice axe to saw it off seem within the realm of possibility
Skiing Elbert was a goal that I stated at the start of my second round of PT, so while this will probably always be a work in progress, I feel like it's paid off at least somewhat already, although some of the solidly Type 2 fun I had on Elbert did involve The Ankle(TM), sooooo...
Haven't really touched the rest yet, except arguably for #9, although given what I said above about Elbert...![]()
5. Hike at least one section of the CO Trail and/or CDT
6. Explore more NPs including but also outside of Rocky Mountain (which is fantastic but is also The One That Just So Happens to Be Nearby...I know, I know, #firstworldproblems)
7. Rethink some of my longterm mountain-related goals. I still want to get around to Kings Peak at some point so I'll have finished out the Four Corners states' high points and Rainier to round out the 14k' state HPs (also because the idea of maybe skiing at least part of it intrigues me), but I'm becoming increasingly sure I just plain don't want to do Gannett, Granite, Borah, Boundary, or Denali, not to mention all the lower-elevation ones with private property issues, so maybe, as with the CO peaks, I should keep my focus to ones I think I might enjoy
8. Try to stay flexible enough to roll with the punches (already had a few in the past few weeks that will have repercussions in some form or another going forward)
9. Continue my post-fourteener project of rediscovering my love for hiking and generally spending time in the mountains

Re: 2025 Goals
Okay, I'll play!
- Do 50 peaks. I don't even care how high they are or if they're ranked or repeaks. I'm way behind (just 8 so far, and all repeaks) but work and snow have really messed with my schedule.
- See 50 bands. I have tickets to 47 so far and only a few are repeats.
- Finish a Falcon Guide. That's non-negotiable... I will get it done.
- Ghostwrite 8 books. One published so far, three more done and to be published soon, four currently in the works... Will probably start a few more before the end of the year.
- Read more books. Currently on A History of Heavy Metal. It's very good.
- Write my own book - not a ghostwriting project, or a Falcon Guide, and certainly not a memoir. Maybe something horror related.
- Do the housework. Nah, who am I kidding?
- Run a lot. Go to the gym a lot. Be nicer to people. Resist.
- Crap, almost forgot. Get at least two more tattoos. Maybe some Led Zeppelin lyrics and Sleep Token lyrics. We'll see what the new music looks like...
