Alex Walker - Nolan's 14 Attempt 10/5/24

Post by SpeedWalker »

Hello!
I will be attempting to finish Nolan's 14 northbound in under 60 hours starting tomorrow, October 5 at 6:30am. If that goes well, I plan to continue onto Holy Cross, potentially aiming for the Holy Nolan's FKT (although that definitely feels like a longshot). Either way, you can follow my tracker here: https://share.garmin.com/AlexWalker

Just for some background, I've finished the standard Nolan's 14 unsupported with heavy backpacking gear in 83.5 hours, which includes about 26 hours of rest. This time, I will be supported at all the major trailheads (and one spot along Horn Fork Trail) to allow for much lighter gear and faster travel. I plan to rest for 4-6 hours each night.

I've also recently finished The Sneffels Round in about 58 hours, which has similar mileage/gain but over rougher terrain at a higher average elevation, so I'm feeling good about fitness/nutrition/sleep strategy. Regardless, I'll be sure to post about how it goes!

Please correct me if I am wrong, but if I am reading the tracker right, after 33 hours he has 10 down, with only Huron, LaPlata, Elbert, & Massive to go. Even with several miles between LaPlata and Elbert, that seems pretty doable in 27 hours for someone of this ability, as long as he isn't totally gassed. Go Alex!!!

He made Huron at 36 hours. Seems to be headed for LaPlata now, then presumably Elbert and Massive after that. Looks like he has a good chance as long as he is OK with climbing in the dark, still has some gas in the tank, and the weather holds. Best wishes on the last 3, Alex.
