10/16/2022 Route: East Slopes Posted On: 10/17/2022, By: FinnishFlicka Info: Hiked Shavano and Tabeguache on a beautiful Sunday. The route up was ladden with fog, but by the time we got to the saddle, we had the privilege of spending the rest of the time on the summits above the clouds, with a beautful cloud inversion, no wind in sight. Trail is still clear and dry - only a few very avoidable patches of snow on the ridge. Walking through the aspen grove near the trailhead was the perfect way to end the day. |

10/8/2022 Route: East Slopes Posted On: 10/8/2022, By: jahaka Info: Beautiful day - basically entirely free of snow to the top. Probably the calmest wind day I've had in recent memory. Trails in great condition. Lost it a good bit coming up Shavano but definitely user error more than anything. |

9/17/2022 Route: East Slopes Posted On: 9/21/2022, By: JasonCrane Info: Reached the summit of Shavano on Saturday. Dry, summer conditions & trail was easy to follow. CFI did some trail improvements at or near treeline & the trail is in great shape. I wore trail runners & needed a jacket due to wind chill on the summit approach. Vert gain 4400 ft, 8.6 miles, in 9 hrs (Garmin Fenix 6x.) |

7/16/2022 Route: East Slopes Posted On: 7/18/2022, By: fosteram27 Info: Summer conditions, a few notes: About 1.5 miles from the TH, I think around 10500 ft, there is a small clearing and the trail goes to the left. This wasn't obvious at 4 am, maybe it's clearer in daylight. We wandered around and found some campsites before finding the actual trail. There is what appears to be a new route/path to the summit on the east (to the right) as you come off the saddle and approach the final ascent. Almost everyone used this going down, but it wasn't easy to see going up. There are a couple signs about adding a new trail to the summit, and I wonder if this is it. I tried to get a decent picture as we were headed down |

7/9/2022 Route: East Slopes Posted On: 7/9/2022, By: rizkillah Info: It's hot! Summer conditions! The trail parallels a stream for awhile and becomes a stream for about 200 ft but otherwise pack light and bring lots of water! |

6/20/2022 Route: East Slopes Posted On: 6/20/2022, By: shapovalovm Info: Went Shavano->Tabegauche->Esprit Point For all practical purposes the trail is completely clear of snow: up Shavano I found a patch of snow so small that it has probably melted by now; Tabegauche has some snow on the ridge leading to the summit, but easily avoidable; no snow on Esprit at all. The road is totally doable by a regular 2WD sedan, just go slow to avoid puncturing your tires. Started at 7:45am, finished by 3:15pm. The wind was pretty bad, especially at the saddles, but otherwise a wonderful day. |

6/8/2022 Route: East Slopes Posted On: 6/9/2022, By: malogos Info: Few small patches of snow between treeline and the saddle. Then a bit during the last 100ft that is completely avoidable. So basically clear. |

6/3/2022 Route: East Slopes Posted On: 6/6/2022, By: Marcos Info: The Angel is still skiing nicely. We got to the saddle just before 9:00 AM, but the conditions were still decent even without a really hard freeze the night before. We got a descent of about 1,500' including the walk across tundra to connect the lower snowfield. Zero postholing on the way up. |

5/30/2022 Route: East Slopes Posted On: 5/31/2022, By: Eagle Eye Info: I attempted Mt Shavano yesterday from the standard S/T trailhead. The creek draining through some of the lower route might make micro spikes useful, a lot of it was frozen. The East Slope summer trail is mostly distinguishable but snow covered up higher, and there are a few forks recently traveled at a particular place which is at 2.4 miles and ~11,800 ft along. At this point the summer trail -which had been going north bends west, but the wrong fork continued north (straight) and it was cairn marked also. The wind howled and graupel-like snow blew powerfully above treeline and I tried to wait it out there, still within some protection in the last of the trees. I came down, having reached 12,092 ft. A couple of people with 2 dogs were heading up when I was back near the trail sign-in register, but I think (especially up high) the conditions were actually getting worse, not better. For a 3 day weekend it wasn't busy or crowded at the trailhead at all, mine was the only vehicle there when I set out, and just 2 more were there when I was leaving. |

5/27/2022 Route: Angel of Shavano Posted On: 5/27/2022, By: Mt_DAN Info: Roads clear to TH. Body of Angel is in good shape. About a foot of snow is lingering in the trees and on the trail up high. Micro spikes might be a good plan for early starts. |

5/17/2022 Route: East Slopes Posted On: 5/17/2022, By: shotty Info: I left a pair of TSL snowshoes a few hundred feet below the summit near a white sign. If you find them, please let me know and I will be happy to reimburse you for your time. Thanks Jake- 505-419-4066 As for conditions on the mountain, there is barely any snow, hence why I forgot that I brought snowshoes... At about 12000 feet, there are maybe a dozen or so patches of snow ranging from 5 feet to about 25 feet. Spikes are also not needed. |

5/13/2022 Route: Angel of Shavano Posted On: 5/14/2022, By: rhammond530 Info: Good overnight freeze on 5/12, crampons worked well the entire way up. As mentioned in previous reports, the right wing is not continuous to the summit. There is a 100 vertical foot dry patch midway up. Snow along the upper east ridge to the summit was not that great, sun cups and wind crusts. I can't imagine that it would be a very fun ski descent. It hadn't softened by 10am when we started down, and was not safe to glissade. The body of the angel had softened up by 11am and made for a nice glissade back into the basin. Skiers seem to be sticking to the left wing / body of the angel. The right wing is not skiable and probably only has 1-2 weeks left before it's gone. |

5/7/2022 Route: Angel of Shavano Posted On: 5/8/2022, By: serveJesusChrist Info: The trailhead is accessible via road 250A. The trail has avoidable snow until about 11,000 feet. After that, it has deep snow throughout much of the remaining route. There are dry sections, so you cannot ski from the top without having to take your skis off and hike short distances. The skiing was good in those stretches that had snow but it won't last long. On the way down, there was lots of postholing to the knees through the trees, but dry sections that made skiing impractical. I think that the ski season is about over for this mountain. |
