Info: The route up to Shavano is in summer conditions, like others have said. There's some snow on the incline up to Tabeguache, but it's easy enough to get around it (and it probably won't stick around much longer). It was a beautiful, clear day today!

Route: West Ridge

Info: Dry, summer conditions with two snowfields, each less than 100 feet across, on fairly level terrain. The first is near the willows, the second is below the ridge. They can easily be crossed with any trail shoe and trekking poles. I did not see anyone else on this route the entire day. Bluebird day with manageable winds occasionally kicking up along the ridge. Be sure to use your odometer from the US-50 turnoff, your GPS, and/or the trail-head picture from the route description in this site to find the unmarked trail-head. The trail itself is in good condition for being an unmaintained, non-standard route (maybe ten fallen trees across the trail to step or climb over) I did not find it hard to follow. Studying the route description and pictures in this site helped. The key route instruction is when you turn left around the tarn. Once on the ridge it is mostly rock, going up and over multiple false summits all the way to the top. The crux of the route is right before the summit. After following the ridge crest the whole way, staying on the ridge would require class 3 climbing to get to the summit. Dropping down the ridge to the right keeps it 2+. Great alternative route to try!

Route: Via Mt. Shavano

Info: I did a solo climb of Shavano and Tabeguache this past Monday and, apparently like the day before, it was WINDY. I started off early (at 4:20, a complete coincidence, really) and got to where the trees peter out at sunrise. The wind was cold enough to take my breath away, nearly knocked me over a few times and I seriously thought of bailing. The air temp gradually rose during the day, but the wind blew on and off (mostly on) the entire way. The calmest period was on Shavano's peak around 8 AM- the experience really made me re-think what gear to bring!

Info: Sent Tab's West Ridge with trail runners and a trekking pole. Doggo sent with four legs and a fur coat. If the forecast is calling for high SW winds be prepared to get blasted on this route. Conditions were mostly sunny, 50s, with sustained SW winds up to 40mph.

Info: A few snow fields with navigable steps kicked in just before the summit. Otherwise, totally clear between Shav and Tab.

Info: Route from Shavano is dry up to the saddle, but summit block has two large snow fields that are easy to walk up. No traction necessary.

Info: Great route! A few small snowfields to cross below the ridge, but all are manageable without traction or flotation, even descending on a warm afternoon. There is snow at all to deal with from the ridge to the summit.

Info: Posted on Colorado 14ers FB group as well. Hiked both Shavano and Tabeguache today. Definitely mostly summer conditions. A few small patches of snow up Shavano, and then a fairly large snow field to deal with heading up Tabeguache. No extra gear needed though, there's still remnants of a boot pack up the snow field on Tabeguache that worked just fine. No issues driving to trailhead in sedan either. Pit bathroom open at trailhead.

Info: Summer conditions all the way to Tabegauche and back. A couple of snowfields but they can be avoided easily. Don't bother with traction or even waterproof gear. Trail and road To trailhead are in great condition for this time of year! Trickiest part of the route is the top of the saddle after reaching the summit of Shavano for the first time (I.e. when you are heading towards Tab). The trail on the upper part of the saddle is a little tough to follow but just head in the general direction of Tab and you will make it. Bagging Tab added another 75 minutes to the hike at a decent pace.

Info: Summer conditions descending from Mt. Shavano. Lingering snowfield at saddle but brief--very soft, expect some postholing. Large snowfield right before approaching the summit, but stable and tracked well enough to not need traction.

Info: Shavano to saddle is dry. Possible to get within 150 vertical feet of Tab summit on rocks. Snow at top is well tracked.

Route: West Ridge

Info: Trail is completely dry besides a few short snowfields of about 100 feet or so cover parts of the trail within the basin. Had spikes but never put them on. No spikes needed in the morning to cross; these fields were manageable in the afternoon. West ridge itself has minimal snow that can be bypassed on the right (south) side. Crux is the last false summit, we chose to go down the class 3 downclimb on the north side of the ridge, which was preferable over the downclimb on loose rock to skirt by 60 foot snowfields that block a lot of the class 2 workaround. The choice is yours.

Info: Ridge from Shavano to saddle is dry. Tab has a few snowfields on its southeast face. My microspikes grabbed the snow really well this morning but you could snake around all the snow. Summer conditions and crowds on Shav.

Route: West Ridge

Info: Got on trail around 7:15am, it was relatively dry with minimal snow above treeline and on the ridge. Didn't use snowshoes or spikes, and wouldn't have needed them (spikes may have been helpful in the morning, but not necessary). Snow softened up on the descent (12:30pm), but was manageable without this gear. This route was fantastic for this time of year, there was only one other party we saw hiking the West Ridge and the only crowds we ran into was on the summit (from others taking the ridge over from Shavano).
