Peak Condition Updates

Route: Northwest Slopes

Info: Climbed Pikes Peak from the Crags. Perfect day for climbing with calm winds. Route was easy to follow until treeline when I lost it due to blown snow over the last few days. Made my way up to the saddle and could see the trail up to the summit. No snow shoes required but microspikes were very helpful. Snow was about 4" deep above treeline until the last 300‘ of the climb when it jumped to 6-9". The last three hundred feet required careful foot placement as you could not see the rocks you were stepping on. Trailhead was driveable by a Toyota Prius.

Info: Good packed trail to treeline, then minimal snow to summit. No need for snowshoes, I got by with goretex trailrunners and gaiters.

Info: We hiked up Pike‘s Peak via the Barr Trail from Manitou Springs today. The trail is dry to No Name Creek. From there to Barr Camp, there are traces of snow, but nothing significant. From Barr Camp to A-Frame, there is a light covering of snow on the trail, but other than a few icy spots, it‘s fine. Above treeline, snow depth increases a bit (4-6" deep in a few places). My wife and I broke trail for part of the route above treeline today, and others were also climbing, so if you head up this week, the trail should be pretty packed down. We brought along Yak-Trax, but we decided not to use them, since there was very little ice along the trail.

Info: We hiked up the Barr Trail today. It took us 10 hours trailhead to summit. Surprisingly little snow. A couple of drifts, but they are easy to get around or through. Gaitors or snowshoes were not necessary. The highway was closed, so our ride couldn‘t make it past Glen Cove. We took the train down (very nice!).

Info: Crags trail covered in snow until timberline. Did not need snowshoes, just good boots. Rest of trail is clear to the top, last pitch has snow in between rocks almost knee high. Peak is getting cold, cover yer face! My playtpus hose froze about 800ft from top. This was my first 14er, and solo ---- now I am addicted, felt so good to hit the top!

Info: Very little snow from the Crags side. Did not need snowshoes, brought micro-spikes for the hike to the summit, but did not need them either. The road to the TH is very doable right now, but some snow did fall yesterday afternoon and last night. Conditions would obviously be a bit different because of that. Goggles & facemask were the norm‘ for Sunday‘s hike. Sorry, no pictures.
