Peak Condition Updates

Route: Southeast Ridge
Posted On: 7/19/2025, By: dr_j
Info: Summer conditions, and the usual afternoon monsoon moisture (and showers in the morning). Lots of flowers in the basin and along the rocky section of the trail below the saddle. There is one last, very short snowfield just past the saddle, and the section before the final pitch is rather tricky to negotiate due to routefinding issues. The access road is pretty rough, even before the last junction, it's a lot worse than I remember it to be, so a high clearance vehicle is recommended.

Info: Full summer conditions. Yellow flowers poppin all over the trail. Note...the road to the TH is a bit rougher than I remember. I sent it in my Forester back in 18' but I definitely (personally) wouldn't now. Shoutout to the homie who did the upper 4WD TH in his Chevy suburban...

Info: Full summer conditions - only patches of snow you can walk around rather than on, if you so choose.

Info: Wetterhorn is pretty much in full summer conditions and is 98% clear of snow. None of the existing snow presented any real problems and were not in dangerous locations. There are a few short, scattered fields on the way up the saddle, then one larger field just below the saddle. There's another on the way up along the ridge just a bit before the class 2 section. The last snow bank is just before the notch, before the 3rd class section. It's nice to have trekking poles, but you would probably be fine without as well, since none of those are in a place where if you slid, you'd do anything more than land in some dirt below. If anyone was wondering, the east face is pretty melted out.

Info: Good ski conditions, although it’s getting a little bony. May not last too much longer for this short but sweet classic. Only a few sections of the trail are snow free down low.

Info: Skied Wetterhorn and Uncompahgre on Tuesday in a total whiteout. Skiing was amazing...visibility, not so much. With the weather we opted to climb the ridge and not the east face. 3"+ on Wetterhorn. 6"+ on Uncompahgre. Road was snowed in about a mile from the main trailhead (not the 4x4 trailhead).

Info: Henson Creek road is open. I parked about 1/4 mile up North Henson Creek Road at some campsites, due to snow. This was about 2.4 miles below the 4wd trailhead. Followed car tracks for the first mile but had to break trail after that. Snow conditions were variable; from hard wind affected snow to deep powder. There was less snow once the ridge was gained. I found it easiest and most fun to scramble up the ridge directly as there was less snow. It started snowing at the summit which made the descent a bit slippery. It soon cleared up and was a beautiful day overall.

Info: Hiked Uncompahgre and Wetterhorn from Matterhorn Creek trailhead. Most high peaks in the area have a little snow dusting on the northern faces. But the south-facing routes up both of these mountains were completely dry, including the Class 3 section of Wetterhorn.

Info: Summer conditions as of 9/21, at least to 13,500'. Got chased off the ridge by thunderstorms at about 10:30 that dropped hail and rain, looking like they might turn into snow tonight. There were maybe 2 cars each at the 4wd and 2wd trailheads this morning and I had my pick of campsites at dusk the night before.

Info: On Saturday 9/14 summer conditions. Weather did move in Sunday and probably got some light snow that might melt but depends on the forecast for this week so check the forecast. Upper 4wd rd was not an issue for our Jeep Gladiator with 4" lift. Saw a Tacoma up there (at upper TH) and some 4Runners along the way. Road is narrow so wouldn't recommend it for larger full size trucks. Some beautiful fall colors are happening in small pockets.

Info: First time summitting Wetterhorn. Summer conditions all the way up - only saw one other person. Started at 6:50am from the lower 4WD trailhead, summited 11:08am, back at car 1:58pm. Mostly bluebird morning but clouds began coalescing on the way down. Although the ridge is somewhat well-cairned, I found the route finding on the way down somewhat tricky. Had to retrace my steps a few times. Definitely download the route to your phone.

Route: West Ridge
Posted On: 7/30/2024, By: Wentzl
Info: This was the 5th time I climbed from Wetterhorn Pass direct up the West Ridge. Trip report with details posted last year. I have to say, if you are climbing Wetterhorn from the north via Owl Creek and the west fork of the Cimmaron, this is the way to go. Today I descended via the standard route and it makes a fantastic "tour de' Wetterhorn". Several new cairns built today. 15 mile r/t from the 4wd trailhead. 5 hrs up and 4 down.

Info: Beautiful day on Wetterhorn and Uncompahgre. Started at 3, summited Wetterhorn at 6:30, summited Uncompahgre at 10:15, back to the car at 1:00. Summer conditions everywhere. Wetterhorn was my first class 3 with some genuine exposure, very fun scramble at the top. The connecting route between Wetterhorn and Uncompahgre is well maintained, but the connection "shortcut" going from the Wetterhorn trail to Uncompahgre can be a bit tough to find. Regardless, this is only about a quarter mile stretch and then you cant miss it. I clocked in at just over 19 miles. Long day, but still saves you time if you plan to summit both.
