Argentine Peak

Peak Condition Updates
10/1/2019
Route: Silver dollar trail
Posted On: 10/2/2019, By: wondering_hough
Info: It was windy so I chose from the upper lake that helped as much as possible. Gusts hit 40 and sustained winds were 15-25 mph. Some mountain goats were on both the east and west ridge of square top. Temps were around 40.

Route: Northwest Ridge

Info: Bridge is in great shape over the first creek crossing.Trail is in great condition to the saddle between Argentine & Edwards. Some trail segments going up to Argentine and around the various "bumps" to get to the proper summit, otherwise just aim towards to the summit if no trail. Free and clear of snow. Summit register in great condition.

Route: from Wilcox

Info: Snow on the east aspect upper rim (Wilcox side), but I never postholed and traction was great in trailrunners. Snow I stepped on was as far north as I could go off of east ridge before getting into steep talus slopes. Photo from Naylor Lake attached. Summer conditions otherwise, this was the only snow I stepped in on Argentine.

Route: Northwest Ridge

Info: Did edwards>Argentine from waldorf mine. 4wd road is clear of snow all the way to the mine, but the rest of Argentine pass is mostly buried in steep snow. Road to the mine is doable in a subaru outback, although a handful of small trenches across the road had me scraping underneath the front of the car. No major damage but higher clearence would have helped. Traction needed for climbing the snow gully all the way to Edwards, but Edwards > Argentine ridge can be done mostly snow-free.

Route: From Square Top Mountain

Info: Pretty boilerplate Class 2 down climb off Square Top Mountain to the saddle, then a Class 2 hike to a (very) long summit plateau. The climb up the ridge to the summit plateau is easier if you stick closer to the crest, otherwise you'll be in nasty, steep talus. From the summit you can either descend to the Argentine/Wilcox saddle (Class 2) and ascend Wilcox or go to the next rib over, to the south, and descend that to the lakes.

Route: via Silver Dollar Lake Trail

Info: Summer conditions on the peak and trail minus one large snow patch on the final summit approach, stayed with the ridge (right) and avoided it.

Info: Approached Argentine from its shared saddle with Mt. Edwards. From the saddle to the summit took our party of 2 just under 45 minutes in the blistering wind. Speaking of which, it was super freaking windy along the entire ridge. Nothing dangerous, but be ready to buckle up. Would 10 out of 10 recommend the Argentine/Edwards combo. (~6hrs total on the trail) happy hiking.

Route: South Ridge

Info: Some postholing on the approach to Silver Dollar Lake. Snowshoes would have helped but I'm glad I didn't have to carry them the rest of the day. Microspikes were sufficient from the lake up to the ridge and on. Also added Wilcox and it's practically dry. Winds were unreal.

Info: More or less solid snow once you get to around picture #6 on the route description. Bring traction as you'll definitely need it. There's a nice cornice building along the top of the ridge but if you stay right as far as you can go you're ok.

Info: Summer conditions. Came from Square Top, all snow is easily avoidable.

Route: Northwest Ridge

Info: Hiked the ridge from Edwards and it was dry the whole way. If going to Wilcox, youll have to cross a large snow field just off the summit to get to the ridge to go down.

Route: south ridge from Square Top
Posted On: 6/17/2017, By: cougar
Info: East slopes of Argentine are still holding sizable snowfields, softened up midday, but they end about halfway down to Murray Lake. Snow can mostly be avoided on the traverse from Square Top until near the false summit/power lines. Flat-ish snowfield up there. Didn't use spikes or any snow gear.

Info: Hiked Argentine from argentine pass TH near montezuma. The road is still pretty dry with patchy snow/ice in a few sections. The trail is mostly snow covered but manageable. The only painful part of the day was moving across two short talus fields that were snow covered. Overall a great day! Come on SNOW!!!
10/22/2016
Route: From SquareTop

Info: Argentine from SquareTop is in great shape. Minimal snow. One small snowfield near the power lines that you will cross, but it's only a few inches deep.

Route: Northwest Ridge

Info: Very wet at the bottom of the basin, running water in the trail. A bridge as been built across the creek, making it very easy to cross. Once you switch back on your way up to the ridge there are several significant snowfields in the gullies, including one much too steep and icy to cross safely in the early morning without crampons and an ice axe. Later in the day it was soft enough to cross.
