Peak Condition Updates

Route: Via Hoosier Ridge

Info: Clear and dry from Hoosier Ridge. The steep talus band halfway up from the Red-Hoosier saddle looked worse than it was, the big blocks were mostly stable and went quickly.

Info: There was a bit more snow from Hoosier Ridge Summit on to Red Mountain C. But still wasn't too bad. The "crux," the 30-40 ft very steep section did seem a little bit sketchy. We ascended, and later descended, one at a time. We also broke out the ice axes and opted for microspikes just for this section. We had brought crampons but didn't think they would be necessary. Snow was fairly firm there despite air temps hovering around freezing though there were some soft spots where we dug in maybe to calf level at worst (ascended around 10:00 AM MDT, descended shortly after). For info on route from Hoosier Pass to Hoosier Ridge Summit via Hoosier Ridge Summit Condition Report

Route: Pennsylvania Gulch

Info: See Hoosier ridge report for approach info. Ridgecrest is mix of wind blown punchy snow and rock. East face has full coverage from summit all the way back to north but is both wind loaded and crusted, descended to Red/Hoosier ridge saddle.

Info: Silverheels/Hoosier/Reds in great condition. 19 miles (seems high) and 6k total. The gist is a deep approach, up to about 11,800, that will require snowshoes or skis - stops there if you take the climbers right side of the ridge/slope up to Hoosier/silverheels turnoff but continues to 12,300 if u bear left. Mostly negligible snow afterwards, with sections of deep stuff that doesn't need snowshoes. Spikes will be helpful for ascent of silverheels which is a steep loose climbers trail covered in 2-4 inches of sugar snow, and one steep bootpackish section going up red mtn. An axe would be nice on that section of red as well, it is a solid 30 degrees or so. Was nice to have one but poles would also totally suffice. Stay far left on it and there is no avy hazard, but definitely stay away from the rollover on the right side - could definitely cause a slide, maybe below you but maybe not. Get after it, the gettin's good!

Route: North Ridge/East Face
Posted On: 4/24/2021, By: Chicago Transplant
Info: Skinned up the north ridge, can skin from car to summit. There are two very short melted spots on the road, the peak is well covered. Skied directly off the summit, no cornice, down the east face. If you head back down the ridge before dropping you might find a cornice depending on where you go. New snow was stable on a solid base, some minor sloughing that didn't run much more than the next turn. Ski out is flat and sticky and was a lot of work. Also skied Hoosier Ridge, see separate conditions report. First photo is upper ridge, second is east face with my tracks from ascent of Hoosier Ridge. Third is horseshoe basin exit.

Route: N Ridge/E Face
Posted On: 4/18/2021, By: k_fergie
Info: Skinned from Pennsylvania Creek TH to the summit along the N ridge, clipped in on the summit cairn for good measure, and then rode the E/ENE face in glorious spring pow. Transitioned, regained the N ridge, and rode back to the car to avoid the flats in Horseshoe basin and all along Pennsylvania Creek

Info: More windy than forecasted, and snowshoes are a must. We hiked from Hoosier Pass to the Pennsylvania Creek TH and we were in snowshoes most of the day. The crux just below the summit of Red Mtn requires crossing a slope that is a bit sketchy w/ the current amount of snow & slope angle. Ice ax might be helpful for this one 30 foot section.

Info: Hoosier Ridge, Red Peak A, and Red Mountain C in that order. Completed entire route in trail runners. Ridge is mostly wind blown and although there is some snow present, the amount is inconsequential.

Route: Fredonia Gulch

Info: FWIW, until the snow flies.... Basically summer conditions. 2-4" snow on the north ridge, just before the summit. 2-4" snow on the east side, just above treeline. Minimal snow on the west aspects between FS600 and the ridge. GORGEOUS DAY! Blue skies, no haze, little to no wind. Was a great reprieve from the issues of 2020 and the election uncertainties. :)

Info: Just one small band of snow that you have to go up between Hoosier Ridge and the summit - otherwise all other snow is off the trail. The one band of snow you have to go up has enough steps kicked in that traction wasn't needed. First photo is wide view of the snow band as seen coming from Hoosier Ridge. Then two closer photos.

Info: My girlfriend, Lisa, and I completed this route today. It had standard summer conditions with only two minor exceptions: (1) Cornice when ascending Red Mtn C. Manageable. Have microspikes and trekking poles at a minimum. We kicked real good steps (2) Assured afternoon post holing during your final section near the Hoosier Pass trailhead
