Route: From West Dyer / Dyer Saddle Ridge

Info: From West Dyer we headed up towards Dyer's Class 4 difficulties. After passing them we headed over to Mt. Evans B, first, in the graupel and rain. On the ridge / traverse over to Evans we passed by the ridge's towers. Started below them on climbers left through the first section. After that we crossed over to climbers right for the bulk of the tower section, staying lower we found to be easier in this section. Storm clouds and thunder kept their distance and moved passed us. Returned to the saddle to confront Dyer's West Ridge.

Info: Route was in great condition for a winter hike, mostly windblown. Had snowshoes but never put them on during the traverse between Pennsylvania and Evans B. Traction was helpful for navigating some of the steeper hard packed snow surfaces. There is a small cornice just to the east of the Evans B summit, but this cornice and the snowfield beneath it are easily avoided by ascending to the left, gaining the south ridge, and following it a few hundred feet to the summit.

Info: Mosquito Pass is well groomed from the Leadville side thanks to heavy snowmobile visitation like always. Started from roughly 11,200ft making it an 8.75 mile day and 2500ft of gain. We cut away from the road up near the power lines to gain the ridge more directly. Then booted the ridge on a mixture of tundra, trail, and light talus with a few small low angle snowfields. Traction and floatation not needed although it got above freezing today so keep that in mind going forward. Mosquito and Treasurevault looked to be in similar conditions going north from Mosquito Pass.

Info: Snowmobile tracks on the 4x4 road made walking the road easy. We still used snowshoes for part of it but you could probably do the whole day with just the occasional post hole until it snows more or warms up. From 12,300 to the ridge we opted for following the steeper slope just to the north of the power lines up to the ridge. We zigged and zagged on snow covered tundra and rocks. There wasn't enough snow here for me to worry about avalanche danger. The wind above 13k was sustained 30-35mph with gusts that knocked me to the ground at least once. A couple of old shacks on the ridge provided brief sanctuary from the relentless wind. Stashed snowshoes around 12,800. I wore all my gear on this ridge. Summit cairn was inadequate as a wind block. Too cold to even look for a summit register.

Info: Great early winter route. Parked on the road before the elevation really began. Beautiful day, wind picked up on the ridge. Snow was manageable, deep (8"-12") in some spots along the road. I didn't use traction the entire day.

Info: Fantastic winter route that approaches from the west! From Leadville take E 7th Street and head east. E 7th Street becomes County Road 3 outside Leadville. Remain on County Road 3 until the winter closure (where the plow stops). The winter closure is right at Benchmark 11056 (listed in both USGS Topos and FS maps with an X and "BM 11056"). Ths is also where County Road 3 makes an abrupt southeast turn near the Famous Mine. From the winter closure to around 12,000, the road is fairly packed down from snowmobile traffic. From 12,000 to the ridge we zig zagged up the road cut, but followed the powerlines on the way down. The slope seemed wind scoured enought for a direct ascent/descent to on the north side of the powerlines.

Info: Was able to drive a bit beyond the normal winter closure to a pull off with the closed/private property mine. Continuous packed snow on the road to 12,000ish and then decent boot pack /wind blown to the ridge and summit. Didn't use traction or flotation and had no problems.

Info: Scattered snow patches on northern aspect of Dyer. Easy to navigate. No traction needed. Dry from saddle to Mt. Evans B summit.

Info: Started at Pennsylvania Mtn trailhead. Some minor postholing from parking to treeline (we found on return if you stay a bit south of trail it was dry. One large snowfield on Pennsylvania with minimal postholing. Ridge down to Evans B saddle was dry. Lots of soft snow to Evans B ridge with plenty of postholing. With some weaving around we avoided much of it. Hit ridge to left of summit and dry from there. Some nice glissades down Evans. On return over Pennsylvania we split the two summits and sidehilled back to trail.

Info: This an easy 13er for introduction to winter hiking. County Road 3 is plowed to 11,070 feet. Mosquito Pass Road is machine groomed for two miles. Ridge is windswept. 7.84 miles and 2,618 feet.

Info: The east slopes of Evans B are quite easy but there's a lot of elevation regain to be had from the Pennsylvania/Evans saddle. Most of the rock on the ascent is stable and you can maybe squeak out a scrambling move or two on some of the slabs. On your return to Pennsylvania Mountain Trailhead (assuming that's where you started) DO NOT take the obliging looking shelf on the south side of Pennsylvania Mountain. It looks great and is actually steep talus field after steep talus field. It's tedious and time consuming and you have to regain a ton of elevation anyway, so just go back over Pennsylvania Mountain, it's far easier.

Info: We were looking for an avy safe, easier, spring peak to jump on and and Evans B from the Leadville side fit the bill. The Mosquito Pass road is maintained to 10,800 (junction of two roads on the FS Topo Map). From there the road is well traveled by both snowmobilers and what looked like a grooming machine. The snowmobiles make their turn around at about 12,000 feet, which is where we donned snowshoes. Due to the low visibility we followed the utility poles (staying to the left) to the ridge before heading to the summit proper. We stashed our snowshoes at the ridge top, which was the correct call. We had a pretty windy day and low visibility until late in the day, but this is a great early spring route to get the legs going again. Stats: 10.2 miles 2,865 feet of gain

Info: The road up to the Pennsylvania Mountain trailhead at the end of Mountain View drive is plowed. A few areas of deep snow up and over Pennsylvania to Evans B. The East Face of Evans B has variable snow conditions, some sections deep and loose and other sections wind blasted. The slope angle averages around 20 degrees. High winds all day, especially along the ridge between Pennsylvania and Evans B.
