Peak Condition Updates

Route: Wood to 13715 to Seigal to Animas Forks
Posted On: 7/2/2025, By: ScottLovesRMNP
Info: Only small patches of snow to negotiate heading up Wood. From there, all snow on the ridges to 13715, Seigal, and Animas Forks Mtn is avoidable. The basin below Gravel and S. Gravel have significant and steep snowfields still persisting. I did not attempt those peaks.

Route: From Cinnamon Pass

Info: Snow in good condition. Minimal postholing. Gained ridge below Wood and decided it was a no go for us. Hiked backed down then took a steep snow climb on the south east side. 38 degrees with 18 mph winds made it 28 degree windchill on the summit. Continued hiking west after summit then found a nice route to descend. Glisaded 1,300' back to the road. Hiked a mile and 500' back to the top of the pass. Used crampons and an ice axe. No snowshoes. arthurtect Peak Chaser

Route: cinnamon pass

Info: Driving from Silverton was not as bad as expected. 1 hour 10 minutes to the top of the pass. Stock 4x4 tacoma long bed with slightly oversized tires aired down to 20 psi. A confident subbie driver with skid plates could make it in my opinion (although I personally wouldn't take less than my Taco). Roughest section felt like the 300 feet just after the Engineer Pass junction. If you can make it through that you're fine all the way to the top and down the other side. Fun ridge from 13708. Awful descent though. Exceptionally loose.

Info: I climbed this from 11.7k on cinnamon pass on the Lake City side. Summer conditions all the way up. Theres snow on the Wood mountain side of the ridge but its avoidable. All snow fields on the way up are avoidable as well.

Route: Cinnamon Pass via Wood
Posted On: 9/14/2020, By: tjf242424
Info: Snow free for the entire route over Wood and 13,708 to the saddle northeast of Animas Forks. The ridge to the summit of Animas Forks is holding snow, including a fairly large slab covering the last 100 ft (photo). For the descent, we returned to the saddle just west of Wood and then dropped down scree to an old mining road which contours back to Cinnamon Pass.

Route: South Ridge
Posted On: 2/3/2020, By: SarahT
Info: Started from Eureka. Several slides have crossed CO-110 but its in safe condition at the moment. After about 4 miles I veered off and started up the Cinnamon Creek drainage and quickly gained the south ridge of Animas Forks Mountain. Steep, loaded slopes near treeline led to more comfortable terrain with plenty of rocks showing higher up. I was shut down 0.2 miles and 100 feet below the summit. The final E-W running ridge between the sub-summit and the true summit was a narrow snow knife edge of sorts, doubly corniced in places... with steep cliffs on the north side and steep, loaded snow slopes on the south side.
