Route: Imogene Pass
Posted On: 7/10/2025, By: JasonKline
Info: Starting from the northern terminus of the Imogene Pass Road near Yankee Boy Basin (aka as far as my Hyundai Ioniq could go since the Imogene Pass Road was right out), this route combined https://www.listsofjohn.com/tr?Id=12296&pkid=472 and https://www.listsofjohn.com/tr?Id=19976&pkid=724 to do a loop of Hayden South->Richmond->T8->T7->Chicago->Tomboy. The route is basically in summer conditions. Most of the remaining snow is avoidable. The only places where I stepped on snow were (1) on the Richmond Road around 11,700' on the way up to Hayden South and (2) around 12,500' between Richmond and T8, and both crossings were inconsequential. If you can drive up to where the Richmond Road leaves the Imogene Pass Road, you can save some distance and elevation.

Route: From Richmond Pass

Info: The ridge proper up from Richmond Pass does not go. You can get up onto the ridge west of point 13011 but the route is blocked by spires just to the east of point 13063, which itself is a sizeable tower. From the ridge I dropped to the north, staying about 100' below the ridge on the kind of scree/loose dirt the San Juans are infamous for, then regained the ridge right before 13063 and went "through" it. Class 2 all the way. The last 250' are a walkup. I summited but bailed out down McIntyre Gulch. There's an attractive-looking road that goes down the gulch but it's gated with No Trespassing signs and cameras... further details redacted.

Route: Richmond Basin

Info: We drove to treeline in Richmond Basin where there is one very nice campsite (the only campsite along this road, and one of the few, it seems, near the Imogene Pass road). From here the road continues higher, all the way to about 12,600. We did not make it far above treeline though, as the road enters a talus field where it becomes very steep and incredibly loose. We made it to a pulloff where the road ahead of us seemed very off camber, steeper, and even looser and uglier. Not wanting to get the car stuck in a sea of talus, we turned around and parked at the campsite. Instead of walking the lame 4WD road, we took the Richmond Trail up to Richmond Pass, which is a nice singletrack that goes up the other side of the basin. Cutting across the upper basin, we gained a ridge and took it to the summit of "T 8", then reversed to the pass, and scampered up Hayden Mountain South. I am unable to find much current information on this road online. I would not recommend attempting without a very capable (think lifted Jeep) vehicle with the tires aired down. Would be a great high point to start at for some easy peaks, but the foot trail up the basin has fantastic wildflowers, and only adds 1,500 feet of gain or so.

Route: From \"T 7\"

Info: A bit convoluted. Instead of staying ridge proper, which is difficult due to extremely rotten towers near the "T 7"/"T 8" saddle, I dropped west well into the basin and traversed below the ridge, avoiding it entirely. There's a grass ramp leading down into the basin. Otina has a good photo of it in her trip report for these peaks (https://www.14ers.com/php14ers/tripreport.php?trip=12904). I then traversed on awful quality talus until I was passed the saddle, then went up grass until it ran out into steep hardpan and kitty litter under a blob of black rock on the "T 8" side of the saddle. The blob looked like it might be scrambly from below but was easy. Past that it was just a hike to the summit of "T 8". To descend I went down "T 8"'s east ridge for a bit to where there was a break in the cliffs and then down steep and extremely loose dirt/scree. Several hundred feet of scree leads to grass and eventually to an old mining road in the basin. I followed the road back to the Idarado Mine gate and then from there went down US 550 to the mining overlook.
