9/7/2015 Route: From Lindsey, Over Iron Nipple Posted On: 9/8/2015, By: BagginPeaks Info: Monday (Labor Day) I did Lindsey and then traversed Iron Nipple to "Huerfano". The most exciting part of the day was definitely the Nipple. I didn‘t know much about the route beforehand, just studied it from Lindsey and trusted in my routefinding skills. One piece of advice, from the saddle (where you gained the ridge of Lindsey‘s standard route) as you approach the complicated terrain of the Nipple, you may see a route going up and to the right, or slightly down/left and straight up through some large rock towers. Go straight up through the towers! I went right and ended up doing a very exposed class 4 traverse around the first set of cliffs. (I have a pic looking back down through the towers once going up through them, but not one from the bottom sorry.) Once through the towers, pick your way up to the Nipple‘s summit ridge. Once on the ridge the exposure increases and there is a short knife-edge section to gain the actual summit. (Be careful, I was on the left side using the knife-edge as a handrail, and there is a huge boulder I was about to pull on and step around which was teetering and ready to fall, I had to drop under it to bypass it, test your holds!) If you summited, go back across the knife edge and drop down on the other side of the ridge and start picking your way down and then up along the ridge to "Huerfano" which is very straightforward. Return the same way up and over the Nipple‘s summit ridge. |

10/9/2013 Route: South Slopes Posted On: 10/10/2013, By: desertdog Info: Dry to the summit. A little breezy, but great weather. Did the Iron Nipple too, dry as well. Lindsey‘s gully had some snow and I bet ice. The ridge route looked dry. The road to upper TH is in good shape. |
