Route: North ridge
Posted On: 9/6/2024, By: SnowAlien
Info: Gentle tundra stroll to the summit. Likely prettiest in July and in a couple weeks when leaves will start turning. Saw the same heard of bighorns as in the previous report. Easyish bushwhacking from the trail. Views of Huerfano, Blanca and Ellingwood are fantastic. Saw some hunters with the base camp around 11k. Register in great shape, just needs more paper.

Route: Raspberry TH

Info: Straightforward route. No problem crossing the creek in Crocs. The previously reported downed trees at the start of the trail have been cut and the trail is obvious. Easy and short section of bushwhacking from the trail to open tundra. Large nursery herd of bighorns on the final slope before the summit. The mosquitos are not yet a problem here.

Route: Traverse from Huerfano and down to Huerfano trail
Posted On: 10/9/2023, By: kyrawhitworth
Info: Summit via the standard route for Huerfano. We had considered adding on Huerfanito but after talking with some folks about our planned route crossing over onto the ranch boundary, ended up traversing over to "Huerfana"/UN13557 (previously unranked 13555) instead and then down to connect with Huerfano trail. Only had to step in snow a couple times on the traverse from Huerfano and it goes at Class 2-3+. When going from Huerfano to UN13557, we found that when not on the ridge crest (fun!), we were lower on the left side but avoided descending into any gullies. Some loose rocks to deal with. Traverse took 2hrs 40min as we took our time to find the best routes though one could do more sporty scrambling with some involved downclimbs if desired. We had a gpx file to assist with our descent (tundra and then some mild trees) to connect with Huerfano trail.

Route: NE Slope

Info: I wanted to check out this newly ranked Sangre. Two or three inches of snow on the upper mountain. The slope is so gentle no need for micros. Great views of Lindsey, California, etc. California looked mostly snow free as well. Leaves are popping.

Route: Huerfano Loop from Lily Lake Trailhead
Posted On: 7/19/2023, By: JasonKline
Info: We basically followed Ben's route from https://www.14ers.com/php14ers/tripreport.php?trip=20871 except that we did it in the counterclockwise direction instead of clockwise. We also didn't do Lindsey due to the closure, so we covered Huerfanito->Iron Nipple->Huerfano->13555 in that order. We definitely saw the private property signs and fenceposts while trying to stay on the legal side when going between Huerfanito and Huerfano. It's summer conditions, with only a small amount of snow that is easily avoidable. We found the ridge between 13555 and Huerfano to be a bit slow and tedious. It mostly went class 2+ with some class 3, but required a lot more route finding than the rest of the day.

Route: from Huerfano(1307) TH
Posted On: 5/29/2023, By: artemavovk
Info: No snow until the turn off the trail (near fire rings). After that it's messy to the treeline - postholing, snowshoeholing to the treeline. After that, no consequential snow.

Route: North Ridge

Info: All snow was avoidable. I hiked up to the lily lake TH and dropped down to the river then up a steep gully. Some nice stable rock on the sides and plenty of loose stuff in the center. Was a steep approach. Traversed to Huerfano afterwards.

Route: North Ridge

Info: This "newly" ranked 13er makes for an outstanding winter outing. We hiked the road to ~10,040 feet – completely derivable if downed trees didn't block the road, at least a day with a chainsaw to clear. It might have been better to keep trucking up the road to the established trail? But, the snow was getting semi-obnoxious on the road so we decided to crank up the steep hill (no avy danger whatsoever) to gain 13,555's north ridge flats at ~10,800 feet. Snowshoes are required from 10,800 feet to treeline. It's a super powder wallow for the last 600 feet to treeline. Fresh snow overnight (~2 inches) made for incredible scenery and un-secure footing across mixed talus/grass. Fantastic trench now in place. Go get it!

Route: South ridge from Huerfano Peak
Posted On: 9/22/2020, By: mikemalick
Info: There is a little snow to contend with from Huerfano Peak to Unnamed 13555, but not much. Could have missed just about all of it though and mostly on the first 1/3. Stayed on the ridge most of the time first 1/3 to 1/2 occasionally dropping to either side. The last half, however, I found it necessary to drop to the left/west side most of the time when the ridge wouldn't allow a class 3 option. Plenty of class 4+ opportunities along the ridge which I graciously declined. Lots of loose rock when dropping off the ridge last half.

Route: North Ridge Traverse to Huerfano Peak
Posted On: 9/6/2020, By: MC.Ikema
Info: UN 13555 > Huerfano Peak: Reiterating that the first 1/3 of the climb from UN 13555 to Point 13470 seemed Class 2+/Easy Class 3. Point 13470 is the brown band of rocks running through the ridge (image #3). From point 13470 to Huerfano the ridge was Class 3 (possibly Class 4 if you don't take the easiest line). There is a ‘Stretch of Faith' about halfway through that didn't seem to have a down climb bypass (image #1 & #2). Just whip out your Gumby legs and split ‘em down the middle to cross this crack in the ridge (easier for us 6 foot folks). The entire traverse took me about 1h 45m. Comments on the UN 13555 registry reported 2 hours to make the traverse from Huerfano Peak.

Route: North Ridge, traverse to \"Huerfano\"
Posted On: 7/7/2020, By: supranihilest
Info: Start at the Lower Huerfano/Lily Lake trailhead. Take the Huerfano trail as it switchbacks up 13,555's north ridge. When you reach the flat ridge top basically just bushwhack south through the forest until you reach treeline. Then take the eastern (climber's left) lobe of the ridge. The western lobe goes too, it's just rockier. Easy hike to the summit. The ridge to "Huerfano" is quite long, contains a ton of scrambling, mostly Class 2+ but up to Class 3 (and possibly Class 4 if you don't find the easiest line), and is very loose and exposed in spots. It would be too difficult to describe the full ridge but a basic pattern is each notch is Class 3 and the expanses in between are Class 2+. The last 1/3 or so of the ridge is actually pretty solid, mostly Class 2+. Do not underestimate the length and route finding difficulties of this ridge. It took me just a hair over 90 minutes.
