Route: Winfield to 13258 South Loop from Just North of th

Info: Summer conditions. There were cornices hanging around the ridges, but the ridges themselves were dry. We didn't find a good way to cross the South Fork Clear Creek without a deep, cold crossing to ensure we were wide awake. We ended up gaining the ridge at the saddle between Winfield and Virginia, and that route went relatively painlessly after the creek crossing. The cornice on the north side of the ridge to the east of 13258 South did block some options for descending back to the north, but we were able to find an OK descent route. The initial descent gully was a little unpleasant, and there were some willows/marsh on the way back to the Continental Divide Trail, but it wasn't bad at all.

Route: 7 pk loop from 13253 S to Winfield Pk

Info: UN 13253 S UN 13253 UN 13235 Sheep Rock Mtn West Virginia Virginia Winfield Pk Summer conditions. All snow can be avoided other than whats on and below Ann Pass, which isnt enough snow to be a major hindrance at this point. We started and ended at Silver Basin TH (0.4mi below Huron 4wd TH) and did the loop clockwise instead of the standard counter clockwise, starting on Ann Pass and ending on Winfield Peak, with a descent off Winfields east ridge to the basin below and bushwhack down to the CDT. I recommend doing this route counter clockwise like most TRs say, starting and ending at the Winfield 2WD area, and going north to south starting with Winfield Peak. The east ridge off Winfield Peak is way less pleasant climbing down rather than up (steep and very loose rock/dirt combo). And the bushwhack from the basin below Winfield Peak into the trees and down to the CDT was hellish at the end of the day, would have been way less awful at the start, and with a nice long trail hike (for autopilot) at the end of the day. The log crossing at Silver Basin TH from Otinas TR several years ago no longer exists, which made for a shin deep ford at the end of our day. Doing it from the Winfield townsite you have the advantage of a bridge across the creek near CR 390, and you can potentially use the mining roads to gain Winfields east ridge instead of the hellish bushwhack (not too sure about this) Summit register on 13253 needs more paper. Summit register on 13235 needs both paper and pen/pencil. Summit register on West Virginia (glass jar) has a cracked lid and some damp paper but still functional.

Route: Winfield -> 13253 South Traverse
Posted On: 6/26/2023, By: jprinner
Info: Traversed from Winfield to 13253 South. You can pretty much avoid all snow on the ridge itself. However, Ann Pass is completely covered in snow and snow patches remain all down the trail. In retrospect I would have gone up this first so we could have walked on hard snow here early in the am. We ascended to Winfield via an old mining road on the north side of the peak. You can see it on the USFS Topo map. River crossing via this old mining road wasn't too bad, but had to take the shoes off

Route: East Ridge from Huron 4WD Road

Info: A rather obnoxious peak. If you don't find any way to cross Clear Creek (there's apparently some planks across it, but I have no idea where) you'll have to ford it. Then there's lots of willows to deal with until you get into the trees, and then there's steep talus below treeline with willows thrown into the mix! It's a steep hike from the upper basin to the ridge and the small outcrops on the ridge are pretty rotten. Class 2 mostly, maybe some Class 2+, but nothing harder.
