6/30/2016 Route: 4th of July bowl Posted On: 6/30/2016, By: SnowAlien Info: Despite the looks of it, Pk 10 still holds respectable amount of snow in the bowl and in the gully. With a short walk, I was able to ski from near the summit down to the car parked at Mercury chairlift. ~2+k vert |

6/28/2015 Route: NE face/4th of July Bowl Posted On: 6/29/2015, By: AlexeyD Info: I was able to drive to about 11,600‘ in the Forester on the Peak 9 road, at which point a substantial snowfield bars further passage. Don‘t be tempted to start skinning here like I was: the snow ends at the end of the switchback, and the road continues to be mostly bare, with short snowbanks here and there, until the large flat area around 12,400‘ below the bowl. I used the old mining road to hike to the summit; again, it‘s mostly melted out with the switchbacks generally having short snow sections. The bowl/face itself is in good shape; there are two entry points on either side of the summit - I took skier‘s right (to be honest, I traversed in a bit from the ridge about 100‘ from the top, and into the center of the bowl, as a thunderstorm was very rapidly approaching as I got on the ridge, and being on my way down as fast as possible seemed like the right idea). The entire bowl seems to be in very good shape, with nice corn snow the whole way, but not too mushy, and no suncups to speak of. A very nice, fun descent - wish I had a little more time to take it all in! |
