6/11/2011 Posted On: 6/13/2011 By: Nathan Hale Info: You can make it about 1.5 (of 3) miles from the winter closure. There are some small snow fields to melt that will allow you to get perhaps an additional 3/4 of a mile, and I‘d expect those to melt within a week or so. Beyond that is a big snowdrift that might be there for a while.
4/21/2011 Posted On: 4/21/2012 By: starke12 Info: Was able to drive within 200m of TH based on GPS coordinates. Only saw 4WD vehicles in the area. Would recommend as there is still some angled snow on the road and as it melts through the day would make it tough to get back down.
7/21/2010 Posted On: 7/21/2010 By: James Scott Info: Drove this yesterday. A couple things that might help- the fork in the road does not have a sign for Sherman on it. Bill‘s description describes a sign, but it‘s down. It does say, I think, County 2A (or 2B). If you go past, you‘ll run into the mine immedately, so don‘t stress. From there, Roach says to go 2.4 miles, and Bill says to go 3.0 miles to the trailhead, which is unmarked on the side of the road. By my measurements (could be off), there was a very small cairn at 3.0, but the trailhead was more like about 3.3 miles. I parked to soon and had to bushwack some willows. It will be much easier in the light, but I was making the drive at 11:00 at night and we left at dusk. There is a definite pull-off space where the trail begins. This picture from the top of Sherman shows how close to the end of the road you go. Stay high on the left of the basin.
6/27/2010 Posted On: 6/27/2010 By: wonderwi Info: The road to the Iowa Gulch Trailhead is open and can be driven by any car. It is a little rough, just take it slow. We moved one of the large boulders that landed in the center of the road off to the side to provide some extra room around it.
11/8/2009 Posted On: 11/8/2009 By: killingcokes Info: Drove all the way to the Summer 4x4 trailhead. There was minimal snow. Should be open for a while
11/1/2009 Posted On: 11/1/2009 By: Boggy B Info: Drove halfway up in my Sentra (could have gone all the way). It‘s starting to get ugly though
5/21/2009 Posted On: 5/21/2009 By: Nelson Info: 5/21/09 Road open all the way to summer trail head and in very good shape. Probably ok for 2wd. From Kake County 2 there is no sign to Mt. Sherman but the turn off is marked "Lake County 2B".
3/9/2009 Posted On: 3/9/2009 By: BillMiddlebrook Info: Normal winter closure in place, 3 miles below the Iowa Mill.
11/16/2008 Posted On: 11/16/2008 By: TheChase Info: Made it quite easily today in a Jeep Cherokee. I think some small cars may have trouble with traction. We needed 4WD.
7/14/2008 Posted On: 7/14/2008 By: lodidodi Info: The main road is open and the lower 4WD road is open and clear.
6/14/2008 Posted On: 6/14/2008 By: J2TheZ Info: The road is open and clear to the summer trailhead. It is easily passable by any vehicle.
6/3/2008 Posted On: 6/3/2008 By: SmoothCruX Info: Trail head open til about 11700. Road gets a little tight with snow drift but should be passable in a few days.
3/6/2008 Posted On: 3/6/2008 By: J2TheZ Info: The road up to the normal road closure is full of snow but still passable for cars with good snow tires or 4wd.
2/19/2008 Posted On: 2/19/2008 By: J2TheZ Info: Lake county road 2 is open and in good shape all the way to the split by the mine. The road up to Sherman however is closed immediately after the split. Add ~3 miles one-way to start here.
2/11/2008 Posted On: 2/11/2008 By: Chicago Transplant Info: The road to the winter trailhead is a little snowier than usual right now. Looks like with all the recent snows this one has been low on the priority list. The road has a nice snowpacked middle, but the sides of the road are soft and have some drifts. 4WD recommended until the next time the plows get through. |
