6/22/2009 Posted On: 6/22/2009 By: theredmex Info: Drove in no problem, all roads in good shape. Climbed San Luis on Sunday (Father‘s Day) and trail was in good shape as well. Some wet spots and a little snow up top, but very doable.
6/4/2009 Posted On: 6/4/2009 By: goclimbamtn Info: Drove all the way in and out on 6/03 in 2wd. Even after all the rain there are no significant mud holes. Trail is free of snow until about 12400.
6/1/2009 Posted On: 6/1/2009 By: ksegasser Info: As of Sunday the road has dried out enough for any 2WD to get to the trailhead. The road is quite good, but if there is a lot of rain I can see it getting difficult in spots.
5/26/2009 Posted On: 5/26/2009 By: Lyssah Info: Road is clear of snow all the way to the small parking lot at the TH and beyond. Due to the recent rain the entire 15-GG road is one huge mudhole, QUITE impassable by anything less than a 4WD with good clearance. My party parked our civics at the start of 15-GG and caught a ride the last 15 miles to the TH.
9/8/2008 Posted On: 9/8/2008 By: Steve_P Info: Excellent dirt road when coming from Gunnison, esp the first ~7 miles- smoother than most NYC roads. Looked at the speedo and was doing 50 several times! Easily passable by passenger cars. As stated by Papillon, the parking area is dicey for cars though so watch out for that.
9/7/2008 Posted On: 9/7/2008 By: Papillon Info: Roach‘s directions from Lake City are spot on and I had no problems with my Honda Civic until pulling into the actual parking lot which is nasty and should be avoided.
7/10/2008 Posted On: 7/10/2008 By: bradyj Info: 2wd/passenger cars have no problem from Lake City or from the east. Roads were clear and dry.

6/16/2008 Posted On: 6/16/2008 By: covfrrider Info: Road is very dry and dusty. Plenty of water in Stewart Creek for caching beers.
6/13/2008 Posted On: 6/13/2008 By: aidworker Info: Trail is dry except for a few small patches of snow which can be avoided easily. No need for ice axe or crampons. Watch out for falling trees when windy. There are probably a dozen trees across the trail which have blown over recently.
6/2/2008 Posted On: 6/2/2008 By: jerryz Info: The road is open and dry, This has to be one of the best dirt roads to a TH I have been on, I think any vehicle can make it to this TH.
6/2/2008 Posted On: 6/2/2008 By: IHikeLikeAGirl Info: I second the below posting. Completely dry and driveable for a 2wd car. The trail is essentially snow free up to the first creek crossing (~3 miles in?).
5/26/2008 Posted On: 5/26/2008 By: JBS Info: Open with just a few lingering patches of snow/mud. 2WD with clearance can make it. TH parking and first two miles of trail are dry.
8/10/2007 Posted On: 8/10/2007 By: robanar Info: The previous report by (mtgirl) is very accurate. The dirt road is the best one I have driven in Colorado! A low rider could easily make it to within 1/4 mile of the TH. The entrance to the TH is a bit rough, but a vehicle with good clearance, and a driver with patience, could easily make it. The only downside is that there are not toilets. This place is a paradise if you are looking for solitude. |
