 Crestone Peak - South Face

My husband and I started at the upper 4WD trail head at 4:00am on 8/6/23. Only saw a total of about 10 other people out there all day. Got back to the vehicle at 7:00 pm and we are average paced hikers. What I'm saying is, it's just a really tough mountain. It's not for everyone. It includes a 1,777 foot elevation gain to the top of Broken Hand pass, then a decent of about the same to Cottonwood Lake.... THEN you go up the Red Gully which is rock climbing. We stayed to the left of the cascading water. Once past that, there is a bit of challenging exposure before you reach the summit. Reaching the summit after 7.5 miles took aerobic endurance, strength in climbing, and good flexibility. Wear a helmet!! Creating rock fall is hard to avoid. We did the best we could to avoid that, but did send a couple down and shouted "Rock" just in case. There were tons of marmots and we got the pleasure of 3 big horn sheep visit, down at the lake on the way back.

but this really isn't a trip report. Please read Bill's suggestions. It's a like a Frankenstein conditions report, route description and stream of consciousness. Glad you guys made the summit! Crestone Peak is a fantastic summit. But go back & edit this and tell us MORE of what you encountered!!
