Grays & Torreys |
We Couldn’t have asked for better weather! Parked at the TH at 6:02am, on the trail by 6:12. Even on a Tuesday, the trail is very busy, and TH parking lot had 3 spots left. So start early is real! If I had to guess there was at least 250-300 people on the trail that day. Sunrise over the ridge is amazing!
super windy about half way up and got pretty cold at the Peak of Grays, so put a jacket on. Ended up taking my jacket off on Torrey’s and for the full decent. The ice field coming down Torrey’s is defined, but was very slippery at 11:30. I would recommend clockwise (grays first, then torreys) - its easier going up grays from the grays switchback than it is from the torrey/saddle side - as far as elevation gain over distance great views on a clear sky day. Watched our parking lot neighbor climb up Kelso’s ridge, he was the only one that day. Several pups made it up. Peak of Torreys is a much prettier summit in my opinion, so if you only have time for one do Torrey’s currently no snow on peaks
I’ve only done Quandary, so thats my only comparison, but this seemed easier. there’s no false summit so you know where your destination is the view as you round the corner and see the peaks for the first time is AMAZING! The trail is very well defined, several places that have rock steps or wooded steps, even through the valley with tall shrubbery the trail is wide enough for two-way traffic.
Momma goat and baby on descent.
Women’s restroom door doesn’t lock or latch closed fyi. Reminder this trail is super exposed & busy so not really anywhere to pull over to pee
