Crestone - Sangre de Cristo Upper Trail |
Came up on Wed 23rd to upper trailhead and used Thursday for acclimation day (flatlander from Oklahoma). 2wd lot unavailable for overnight parking, so plan accordingly. 14 guys total, left camp near the river from Lower Lake around 4:50am to reach Broken Hand Pass- no difficulty there. Had been raining heavily the previous two days, lot of scree and loose rock heading up BHP to Cottonwood Lake. Not much foot traffic for a Friday Morning, continued to Red Gully for summit attempt. Made it up more the middle of the slab area (rain washout from prior two days relegated us to a narrow climb) and called it due to boulders and rocks falling from another group (about 13,300 elevation). Other part of group made it to 400ft from summit around 11:30am, they turned around due to rapidly approaching cloud coverage decreasing visibility at peak. Overall, incredible hike and climb- will return at a later date and point with bump helmets and climbing gear to better facilitate our group's ascent of the Red Gully. HIGHLY recommend taking left side approach of Red Gully as there is less exposure, easier climbing, and less climbing traffic.
4WD Trailhead driving was pretty technical and the road was not maintained, I would not recommend low clearance vehicles for the approach to the upper trailhead.
Weather conditions were favorable during our time out in South Colony Lakes, saw comfortable highs in the 60's and lows in the mid-30s. Rain came around normal time for July in Colorado, around noon or early evening, with the exception of Thursday, which rained for several hours with accompanying hail and sleet.
If you plan on fishing, the upper lake by Humboldt Peak Trail was well stocked with Rio Grande Cutthroat and some rainbows. Saw some at the lower lake with less luck fishing.
