Huron Peak- A Good Start and Great Brookie Fishing!
This was a great mountain to begin our summer of hiking. If you are planning to camp and enjoy fishing, bring along a pole (Pistol Petes work great!). Camping at Huron Peak is nice. Upon arrival at the trailhead, we went about a half mile toward Lake Ann and camped in a beautiful wooded site. South Clear Creek was nearby as seen in the picture below. The creek is teeming with brookies. Copper, our almost 1-yr old Beagle, was enjoying fishing the night before taking on his first 14er. These were a tasty addition to our dehydrated dinner. The relatively gradual ascent through the trees and up the switchbacks brought us into the basin shown below. The morning of our hike was beautiful with cloudless skies. Fortunately, it remained that way throughout the entire day. It rained most of the night in the valley as we slept. It was evident it had snowed in the higher elevations. As we reached the saddle, the trail to the peak was clear. The views of the Collegiate Peaks were amazing. Two weeks later, we would hike the West slope of Missouri seen just left of center in the following picture. You can see the route through the trees and up the ridge. A week after we climbed Missouri, the road was washed out stranding nearly forty people. I left my boots by the gate at the end of the 4wd road. If any one found them, please let me know. The Three Apostles magnificently captured in the beautiful frame of a crystal blue sky. The Apostles in the background produced our favorite summit shot yet. Copper was thoroughly enjoying his first summit. There was snow, a perfect spot for Copper to chill. A look back down the ridge beginning our descent. The trip back to the meadow was swift and fairly easy. We enjoyed a few moments of respite in the meadow. You may notice the training collar on the dog. Copper is a hunter; the collar is there to remind him not to eat the Marmots ! After resting from the trip off the saddle, my wife is preparing for the stroll across the basin. We say goodbye to the Apostles before heading into the trees. One last look at Huron. The long walk through the trees was hot. The creek crossing could not come soon enough for Copper. We all cooled off in the creek. As we approached our campsite, this view of the mountains was a reminder of how good God was to us on this day. huffy13	Good job! 9/5/2010 8:54pm And a great report. We did Huron bck in June and loved the scenery, especially the Apostles, but the views from Huron are some of the best I've been on so far. the only thing I didn't like very much was how small the summit was. There were six in our group and a couple of other folks that got there just after us and that summit seemed awfully crowded. It was still worth it though.
