Video: Flooded out Backpacking in Death Hollow, Utah 2019

This is a video from a 3 day, 2 night backpacking trip in Death Hollow near the town of Boulder, Utah in May of 2019.

Day 1 we parked at the Boulder Mail Trail Trailhead past the Boulder airstrip, where we hiked on top of the rock over to Death Hollow. We dropped down into Death Hollow where we found a camp spot for the first night. The weather was cloudy and rainy all night, and we woke to find snow/rain falling and waterfalls spilling over the canyons edge while we were sleeping.

Day 2 we woke up to find the creek flowing nearly 5x the output as the day before. Temperatures were in the high 40's/low 50's during the morning as we packed up camp to head down Death Hollow. It rained throughout the morning delaying our start to the day. We finally got to hitting the trail only to be turned around due to deep waters. This route is normally through the creek bed the entire time, and barely 200 yards from camp we encountered water chest deep or higher. This was disheartening, and ultimately we had to turn around. We had plans to find a camp spot near the exit to Death Hollow, but due to cold temperatures and a few members of the group getting wet, we stayed in the same overhang once more.

Day 3 we woke to less cloudy skies and a chance to hike out avoiding the weather. We made it up and out of Death Hollow only to find dark rain/snow clouds making their way towards us. We made it nearly to the cars before it started raining on us. This trip was an excellent adventure, and despite being turned around it was still a fantastic time. We will return some time in the future to finish the task and hike through the crux of Death Hollow.

It was an amazing place with a huge diversity of vegetation and scenery.

The full video will be available soon.

Slimey groveling for youtube likes aside....

You learned why this hike is typically done in august. Even in august, i swam many of the pools and it was far from a wading hike down the wash. It sprinkled on us our last night and there was significant increase in flow.

This hike is not "typically" done in August at all. In fact, August has nearly 3x the precipitation when compared to May. Also temperatures in August are roughly 15-20 degrees warmer.

If you have been paying attention to Utah at all, you would know this year has had over 200% the precipitation of normal levels. We had a trip booked and decided to go for it. We were neever in danger of our lives and always had a way out nearby if it was needed.

My Youtube channel is not monetized, nor do I receive any other income from any other sources for my channel.
I love how sharing a piece of art that I created is "Slimey Groveling" IYO.

Just another reason to not visit the .com as often as I used to. People like you.

Wah, wah. Death hallow's "season" is typically august. Yes, much warmer, but when you're swimming all the time, it is enjoyable. That's not to say you can't go "out of season," but your risk with the "200% precip of normal" melt off from the high mountains and a small rain do put you at risk.

One thing you are correct about is I don't pay enough attention to Utah. Since i moved away in 2013, it has been difficult to "keep up" with it.

Climb safe and good luck with your utube career.

I don't think it was the sharing of the art that got that response... it was the "Check out my other videos as well! Like and Subscribe if you do. It will help me create new videos in the future. "

It does sound like asking for likes and subscribes.

It would have been more artistic if you featured more of the scenery and less of the "Dancing with the Stars", "Look what's for dinner", and the outdoor ad for Dave's Bubble World. Just Sayin! Maybe we will see you on Ridicolousness in the near future. Nothing wrong with having fun out there, but don't send the wrong message. These places are not Theme Parks. I sincerely hope you packed out all that trash my man!

for those ignorant folks like me that don't know about Death Hollow, the grammar/punctuation of this thread title made me think someone died in a "flooded out incident while backpacking in Hollow, Utah"...

talk about an unintended click bait title and what would've been the type of video you don't want to watch but have to

I usually have a chance to feature more scenery shots in my video, but due to weather I had to get creative. Since we got rained out, we had time to hang around camp, relax, and have fun. I disagree, and view these places as natures theme park.... Are you not supposed to have fun? I was taught to be respectful of the environment, other people, and no one should have a problem with it.

I always pack out all of my trash during any backpack, while abiding by any rules and regulations of the Wilderness area.

Not sure where having fun out there became a problem. Keep kicking down cairns and being masters of the universe. =D>

If you don't like my videos, don't watch them. (Considering there is a YouTube video option embedded in these forum for the exact reason of posting YouTube videos)

To those who do watch them and enjoy, Thank You and I appreciate the support.

Safe trails!
