Re: 2023 Goals

Post by desertdog »

Keeping mine simple this year...

Finish the Bicents, 9 left and all are backpacks except Castlelebra. No still have 8 to go, but that includes both the LiDAR and historical lists.

1 international climb. Yes Mount Aspiring, New Zealand and The Condor’s Head, Bolivia. Tried Ama Dablam Nepal but got sick and bailed.

1 Cascades trip. Yes Mount Rainier Kautz and Mount Baker Northridge
The summit is a source of power. The long view gives one knowledge and time to prepare. The summit, by virtue of the dizzying exposure, leaves one vulnerable. A bit of confidence and a dash of humility is all we get for our work. Yet to share these moments with friends is to be human. C. Anker

Re: 2023 Goals

Post by Scott P »

As of 11/14. I have had a pretty good year so far, but I am way behind on technical towers or buttes if anyone wants to do some. I'm leaving for Patagonia next week and won't be back until almost mid-December though.

Of note, I got to do a last minute trip to Turkey and climb Ararat and Süphan which weren't originally on this year's list, but which have been on my list for many years.

Since I'm leaving next week for Chile/Argentina and won't be back until mid-December I have a pretty good idea about what I will and will not get to through the end of the year.

Generic Goals for 2023

As of November 14:

Total Hiking, Climbing, and Canyoneering Days = 320-Currently at 305. I am ahead of schedule.
Total Days Hiking, Climbing, Canyoneering, and Biking Days = 350-Currently at 305. I am ahead of schedule.
Summits Climbed = 150-Currently at 182. The goal has been met, but I'll do more.
New Summits Climbed = 60-Currently at 87. The goal has been met, but I'll do more.
States to Climb Summits in = 6-Currently at 4. I am a little behind schedule, but am supposed to be working next to New Mexico soon so will almost surely at least one more state.
Countries to Climb Summits in = 3-Currently at 3. The goal has been met. I am leaving for Chile/Argentina next week.
Rock Towers/Technical Buttes = 10-Currently at 1. We attempted 1 other one, but it was too icy to climb. Does anyone want to do some?
Technical Rock or Ice Routes = 30-Currently at 30. The goal has been met, but I'll do more.
Gym Climbing Days = 30-Currently at 2. I won't make it, but I'm not in a big hurry and won't make it.
Technical Canyons = 30-Currently at 23. I am a bit behind schedule since I was working in Granby much of this year.
Biking Days = 30-Currently at 0. I won't make it, but I'm not in a big hurry for this one.
Lose Weight in lbs. = 20 (currently at 268)-Currently at 11 lbs. lost.

Plus this: Try not to get too riled up on people not knowing that calendar winter isn't a good definition of winter (even though it's the one used for official winter ascents) and people improperly identifying the Gore Range as well as people calling this extremely popular range "secret". -Doing OK so far.

I'm going to call the below a Wish List, rather than a Goal. The reason is my Goal is to finish 50% of the below. It is extremely unlikely that I will finish all this, but my goal is 50%. Of course more will be added as the year goes on. As always, partners are welcome. (Gaps will be left every 50 to make it easier to reference while I'm updating).

As mentioned on a previous post, I am now working in Granby until Thanksgiving so several peaks in that area were added and I'm not going to make it to as many places closer to Grand Junction as I originally planned.

After my descent into medical hell, my accomplishments for the tail end of 2023 are pretty modest:

-I re-learned how to walk without collapsing.
-I actually summited something recently, a modest peak in Dinosaur National Monument, Yampa Plateau. Fun overnighter with one buddy and several beers.
-I've completed 2 of 5 infusions (intravenous immunoglobulin) that should reduce or maybe even eliminate the 24/7 pain I've had; it's not all that bad at present but the prospect of life without pain now seems sort of alien, I've had it for 6 months straight. It's been character building for sure, no doubt good training for future epic ascents
-I'm hoping for one more DNM summit this year if the weather holds, we'll see.
-I was able to watch (TV, sigh...) the Broncos beat the Chiefs. Best. Accomplishment. Ever.

Updating this again:

(2) Heath & fitness significantly improved lately - long standing achilles tendonitis has been resolved (mainly I think because of a change in running shoes, Brooks versus Hokas) & my fitness is as good as it's been all year, much better than last year at this time (I can even sometimes sort of keep up with my younger friends, albeit a tempo pace for me versus a conversational pace for them);

(3) While still not the most successful year in terms of peak bagging, I did add one very nice peak on October 2nd: Mulhacen, the highest peak in the Iberian peninsula. Not a particularly hard mountain, but a cool achievement & a fairly big vert day (6,400 feet).

(4) Six day inn to inn hiking trip in the Alpajuras with my partner Carolyn. (Mulhacen was day 5, while Carolyn rested in town :)).

(8) As expected, I'm going to fall a bit short of my mileage goal, but I should get over 1,900 miles, and I've already exceeded my vert goal (I'm at 404,500), and will come close to (but probably fall a little short of) my "stretch" goal of 450,000 feet. Will be my biggest vert year ever.

Not so great compared to some of you guys, and short of my goals, but I'm pretty happy how my year turned out - not bad for 63 years old - especially given that the summer months were compromised by a badly sprained ankle & Covid.

Next year: Mexico in October/November, Pico de Orizaba etc.
LarryM wrote: Thu Sep 14, 2023 11:19 am Late summer update. Not an overwelming success so far.
LarryM wrote: Fri Jan 13, 2023 4:59 pm (1) Be grateful for what I can still do in the mountains at almost 63 years old, and at peace with what I can't do. Mixed. On the one hand, I'm frustrated at what I haven't been able to do. OTOH, I still managed to spend a lot of quality time in the mountains & on the trails., doing stuff that 99.9% of people my age can't do, and am happy with that.

(2) At the same time, work on re-gaining some lost fitness to at least somewhat push back against the sands of time. Also mixed. Compared to when I posted this, certainly I've regained some fitness. I was pretty happy with my progress at the end of June. But the summer could have been better - a badly sprained ankle at the beginning of July, Covid at the beginning of August - so I've regressed a bit. But at the same time, when I climbed Elbert in July, 10 days removed from the sprained ankle, I still managed to pass 40 or more (probably more, I didn't keep count - it was a weekday, but still a typically crowded summer morning on Elbert) mostly younger people on the way up, with no one passing me (well except one guy early, but I passed him back at tree line and left him in the dust).

(3) Several new peaks - mostly 13ers. I have a bunch in mind but will remain flexible as to which ones. In terms of 14ers, mainly I want to finish up the Sawatch (Holy Cross, Oxford, Antero and Tabeguache). Mostly a failure; my sprained ankle severely limited me on my planned 2 weeks in the mountains in early July. The only new 14er was Sunshine, no new 13ers. Some new lower peaks: Seven Utes Mountains (11er), Eldorado, Mount Falcon, The Chief (Squamish BC). A number of repeats as well (including Elbert, Grays, Red Cloud, Hallett, Niwot, and of course many repeats on the local Boulder peaks). Probably no more this year - I'm headed to Spain for 3 weeks tomorrow, and by the time I get back, the high mountain season will be almost over (for me, I don't really get out much in the high mountains in winter or late fall). Contemplating attempting Mulhacen, the highest peak in Spain - though it will be a big day from where I'll be staying (Trevelez).

(4) Fun with friends in the mountains - okay, this should be higher - part of the reason for #2 above is so that I can continue to hang with my mostly younger / more athletic friends without slowing them down too much.I'll count this as a success, runs with friends and hikes with my partner. The former somewhat less than in previous years due to slowing down.

(5) Complete another Ultra after missing cutoffs in the last 3 I ran. Looking at the Never Summer 60K. Bonus is that the best part of the course is front loaded, so I can still have a great day in the mountains even if I don't finish.DNF at Never Summer (didn't make a cut off). I had excuses - lingering ankle soreness + running on borrowed, worn out shoes (don't ask). Still a great (half) day in the mountains.

(6) Finally do the Weston pass to Mosquito pass traverse, which has been on my list for 3 years now. Maybe the most efficient way to tag ten 13ers (roughly, depending upon how you count them) and a 14er in one day.Nope

(7) Volunteer again at Hard Rock & live vicariously through the crazy people who run the race. Also volunteer again at the Never Summer 100K, the day after I run the 60K.Yep. Both great experiences.

(8) Finally get my first snowflake. Attempted it January 2, but turned around short on Bierstadt because of a late start. No, but I still have a week in December to get this. :)

(9) 2,000 miles / 400,000 feet of vert.On track for the vert (currently at 316,906); going to fall a little short on distance (currently at 1,395 miles). Still can't really complain.

Modest by the standards of most people on this site, but if I manage most of those I'll consider it a successful year.

jrbren_vt wrote: Mon Sep 04, 2023 11:55 am I broke my fibula/ankle on Horn Peak on June 18, which pretty much wiped out my summer hiking season. My 13er and 14er count needles have not budged this year. It's been 11 weeks and 1 day since the break, not that I am counting, and I am walking around on flat trails around COS now. My goal for the rest of the year would be to get back into hiking and hopefully climb some "low hanging fruit" peaks I have not done yet, probable targets Sherman, Bierstadt, Sniktau/Cupid/Grizzly, and peaks I have done before where there are no "surprises". Class 1 stuff. I am still a few weeks away from that. Maybe do some winter (I don't mean the calendar definition, I mean hikes in winter conditions, I know many on this forum consider it important to distinguish) ascents of the easier peaks after when/if the snow flies. I have experience with this just don't enjoy it as much as snow free trails.

Congrats to all who are "crushing it" out there, I am living vicariously though your trip reports and YouTube films.
The fibula is mostly healed by now, working on improving fitness to where I was. I wound up getting in 1 unique 14er (I stuck with the old saying, if you can only do 2 Colorado 14ers this year make sure they are both Sherman) and 8 13ers (Sniktau, Cupid, Grizzly, Flora, Eva, Dyer, Sheridan, Peerless & Horseshoe) in before the snow flew. I went up and down Mays peak (really nice workout peak in COS) many times, Kineo Mt, Blodgett Peak and Mt Garfield once each. So a good recovery fall. Also working on a project to climb Mt Rosa from N. Cheyenne Canon in COS for every month of the year. I need December, so I will be doing it this month. I also need February, July, August & September, which of course has to wait for 2024. The summer months are hard because I usually want to go elsewhere when the higher peaks are snow free. I also want to get my total hiking elevation gain for the 3 years I have lived in COS to 360,000 (10K per month), so I need about 10K+ this month to do that. I am interested in trying Bierstadt in the near term now that Guanella pass is closed and it is a >3K climb. Perhaps try some "easier" winter season peaks this year like James Peak, Silverheals, Quandary, Elbert. Really good weather and avalanche forecast required for me for these. Equally important to me is I want to improve my running fitness compared to what it has been in recent years. Happy hiking/climbing !

This was actually a goal from 2022, but I had an idea of traversing across the Sawatch on the ridge of the Continental Divide. That proved pretty hard - and I ultimately hit a rain storm I didn't feel like enduring. I popped up a video showing the terrain - here's a writeup of the general idea. headsizedburrito went on his own attempt (and funnily, we never hit the same part of the ridge!), and Scott Sidener tried as well, bringing along a rope!

So much for "the gentle talus piles of the Sawatch"!

Obviously not a universal sentiment, I realize, but 2023 has been one of the best years in my own recent personal history, that’s for sure.
HikesInGeologicTime wrote: Mon Sep 04, 2023 9:20 am I’ve…kept the ski-at-least-one-day-a-month streak I’ve had going since October ‘21 alive, even if August was more gingerly shuffling my skis over dirt than actual skiing, so I’m hoping for some decent snow somewhere by the end of September so I don’t ruin my bases before the official season even starts!
There was snow in September, but I did not manage to time it so that I could get something resembling decent skiing in…suffice to say I have a new appreciation for the local ski areas’ early season White Ribbons of Death after making 2.5 anxiety-inducing turns on St. Mary’s White Quantum Filament of Death that month!

But I got some fun turns in at Indy Pass after that October storm, hit the various WROBs in November, had a fantastic opening day at Monarch today, and skied Berthoud Pass last Thursday and yesterday, so I think I may even have gotten some self-powered uphilling in every month this year? Definitely collecting as many uphill passes as possible in addition to keeping track of conditions at and near the accessible mountain passes so I can keep that streak going with the bonus level!
The Big Goal that I’ve been working on for the past few years - namely, finally finishing the f—-ing fourteeners…
…is finally finished! And I’ll have all of leaf season to celebrate by enjoying some nice, boring hikes up nice, boring trails and mountains where I can mosey along and listen to music and take lots of pictures and not worry about getting weathered off something steep, slick, and scrambly!
Still finished with the fourteeners, and it still feels awesome! I also managed to finish a longstanding (that word choice will be mildly amusing by the end of this sentence) but decidedly secondary-to-fourteeners goal of summiting all the ranked Front Range Centennials with a brutally long (heh heh, get it?!???) day and some on Meeker in early October.

I guess it’s not in me to abandon lists entirely, so I do have some further goal peaks in mind, but a lot of them are either easy enough for even my level of (in)competence, could be made legitimately fun by throwing skiing somewhere in the mix, or are prime opportunities for friends to peer-pressure me into them, plus I’m no longer forcing myself to complete lists if doing so is getting to be more miserable than magical. So really, this is the first end-of-year I’ve had in…hmmm…apparently longer than I can count that I haven’t already been stressing about how to up my peak count for next year, and that feels super-duper extra special awesome!!!!

*I need to do a big day first, like 6-8 laps, to see how my body and mind handle the challenge but I think it's within my ability and current conditioning
I had a day back in January when I did 6 laps, but never got close to trying again for an inclinathon. Work took me out of Manitou, as per usual. But I'll probably finish this year with 75-80 ascents...so there's that, which isn't bad since I'm mostly a winter incliner.

- more 13ers, should get over the 300 ranked line this year
I think I was at 307, and then Bill reset the list to lidar, and now I'm down to 300! lol All good though! Those other peaks count for something!

- I was hoping to finish bi-cents by Aug '23 but I'm unsure I will have the time to get in 3 backpacks (Oso, Animas group, & Trinity group are all b.p.'s for me), so hope to cut bi-cent *list in half
*1 in the Tenmile (saving for finisher), 11 in the San Juan, 2 in the Sawatch, 2 in the Sangres (and I think those numbers represent the LiDAR changes/additions)
I didn't put much focus on the bicent list this year, like I thought I would. I didn't even do a backpack. I did quite a bit of repeating with friends, both 14ers and 13ers.

- 1/2 dozen spring snow *climbs
*nothing in particular in mind, but thinking of Mt. Emma w/snow and the "new" Sangre bi-cent w/snow
Amy Blazin and I did Emma with snow, and that was a fun climb! W Apostle w/snow. And the new lidar ranked 13er by Geislers w/snow. Not as much snow climbing as I hoped but at least I got out a few times.

- couple trips to ice park in Ouray and/or Lake City
*already have one trip to Ouray this season
Only got on ice 1x at beginning of year, as my usual climbing partner had too much going on building his house in BV. Going to Lake City before end of year though.

- 2-3 winter peaks, 13ers or 14ers
1 13er, Homestake, shortly after the first of the year and that was it!

- have fun with friends in the mountains!
Definitely this! I connected with some incline friends for peaks this year and it turned out we make a good fun crew!

I spent some weekends in Montana too, although we didn't do any peaks, we did some hikes in the Beartooths and it would be cool to go back to get some summits there.

I wasn't sure how the year would pan out considering I had no idea when I wrote these goals that I'd end up having foot surgery in Feb that took me out of commission for several months. Overachieved on #6 and had successful summits on each trip: Ecuador (Jan)- Iliniza Norte and Cayambe, Switzerland (Sept)- Breithorn 1/2 Traverse and Matterhorn, Mexico (Dec)- Iztaccíhuatl and Pico de Orizaba
