What inspired you to start hiking?
Do you hike regularly, and why?
Have you noticed any changes in the hiking community over the past few years?
It's relevant to say I grew up in Upstate NY, spending most of my time in the woods unsupervised. But at 17, I joined the military. Before I knew it, 20 years had gone by, much of which I spent in deserts, and not much time spent out in "real" nature in a long time. I moved to Colorado and started hiking because "it's what people do here." I quickly became obsessed with summits; when I first stood on top of a 14er, it felt like a part of me clicked into place that I hadn't felt in a very long time. I hiked every weekend during the warm seasons, and sometimes in the winter, for a few years, before hiking ultimately led me to trail running and ultramarathons. I still try to hit a few summits a year, but my main focus now is trail running and moving toward alpine running. I think I'm too new to have noticed much change so far.
