1. Pawnee-Buchannan LOL, no. I spent the summer bushwhacking through burned and unburned forests for work, was kind of over it by Sept
2. Squat > 360lbs Close. 350
3. Weight < 210 Meh close 220
4. Ski > 10 peaks, don't care about their elevation or level of radness LOL, had a month long cold mid-Apr to mid-May then got Covid as soon as the cold went away. Then weather sucked on my days off. Didn't ski s**t.
5. Finally time Whole Enchilada correct to ride the entire thing. LOL, no, didn't even try. See #1 above.
6. Move on after divorce GREAT SUCCESS!

madmattd wrote: Mon Jan 02, 2023 2:18 pm 325mi hiking - New goal (Sept): 450mi. Well, I'm a few miles shy of 500 with a few days left in the year...
100k vert hiking - 148k
2 winter snowflake hikes (13ers or 14ers) - Killed this one: 4 14er hikes (Bierstadt, Evans, DeCaLiBron*, Pikes), 1 13er hike (Grizzly/Cupid/Snikatu).
Class 3 explorations - Kit Carson/Longs are my only real class 3 ascents, but I loved both (ignoring Challenger Point to get to KC...) - Revisited Longs, did Pettingell's East Ridge, West Partner South Ridge from the Outpost saddle (super fun!). So sorta success? Had a few others planned that didn't pan out.
More backpacking - 4 nights minimum, 6+ desired - 5 trips, 6 nights.
10 new ranked 13ers - Uh, well... I hit 21 (plus 4 repeats). Getting 6 in one day (Cataract-UN13256) didn't hurt.

More specific goals:
- Hiking/photography trip to Moab (Canyonlands/Arches). Haven't been since 2018(edit:2019) due to a variety of reasons, needs to happen this year! - Had a fun trip in early March, good to get back out there for a few days.
- Chicago Basin trip (3+ 14ers & Jupiter) - Didn't really ever get the planning off the ground on this one. In the early planning stages for 2024.
- Wetterhorn - Hoped to hit this during Fall Gathering - 70mph winds said nope.
- Lindsay NW Ridge (if access reopens...) - Yea...
- Attend Fall/Winter Gatherings - Attended Fall Gathering, went to do Fletcher during Winter Welcomer with a forum member but we aborted around 13.4k and didn't hang long enough for the main groups to finish.

Today will be my last day out for the year, so I'll go ahead and recap now:
bmcqueen wrote: Sat Dec 31, 2022 7:41 am Here are my 2023 goals:

1. Keep the monthly streaks alive - bike to work day (at 18 months); at least one 13er/14er (at 95 months); Castle Rock stairs (at 13 months) and 100+ miles running (at 8 months) - all still alive assuming I can muster at least 3 more running miles in the next three days. Logging it.
2. At least one new winter 14er (currently 8 to go) - nope - spun on an El Diente attempt March 2023 and spun last week on Capitol. Still at 8.
3. Sawatch grid slots - at least 8 more (currently at 106/192) - yikes, zero progress!
4. Improve my own skills on rock so that I can do a better job on 5 - got out on rock much more often this year.
5. Help others develop new skills - done; joining three friends for a June Rainier climb was the highlight.
6. New bi-centennials - at least 6 (currently 22/23 to go - haven't fully digested LiDAR stuff yet), including at least one tough one (targeting Peak 15 (again)) - only got three - Pico Aislado, Monitor and Animas.
7. Get 2nd ultra under my belt - shooting for a 50-miler after a successful 50k in 2022 - done - 50-miler in July.
8. >75 total 13er/14er summits (ranked/unranked) for 2023 - nope - 36 in CO (7 14ers; 29 13ers + another summit of Rainier).
9. Three 13er snowflakes (currently have a lowly 10 ranked snowflakes) - got five - Wilcox, Pacific, Atlantic, Parnassus and Bard.
10. At least one day out with my wife, my son and my daughter (likely to be different days) - need to get their buy-in on this goal early! - done

Happy New Year all!

daway8 wrote: Mon Nov 13, 2023 8:04 pm Was going to squeeze in one more hike today but wiped myself out yesterday turning a nearly missed goal into a last minute success by getting a snowflake on Longs. So this wraps up 2023 for me and it was a super successful year!

- Remaining 14er subsummits: Southeast Longs, West Wilson, Pin Point
Squeezed in a surprise trip to knock out West Wilson and the delightfully fun Pin Point. Thought about banging out a Southeast Long Finisher but decided to save it for next year to make it easier for others to join in. So I'm marking this a qualified success.

- Expand 13er count - both snowflake and otherwise and inclusive of all categories (cent, bicent, ranked, unranked).
Hit double digits in new 13er flakes so I'm very pleased with that.

- Possibly try to squeeze in another 14er snowflake or two
Nailed it with a last minute successful snowflake of Longs with just days left in the year! Shav/Tab already on the radar for early next year.

- Consider (conditions/schedule permitting) taking on some harder 13er snowflakes (class 3+) in order to help address the above fruit problem
Per earlier update, this one also flagged as a success plus Longs snowflake was a good confidence booster.

- Commence pondering the possibility of some year maybe actually doing some winter camping
Really rocking this one beyond expectations - even if only car camping so far. But that's really helping me flush out the details and figure things out before actual backcountry winter camping down the road... I have indeed carried this into actual winter - so far so good. Just have to decide how soon to plunk down the cash for good outdoors gear as the 12lbs sleeping bag in the 4Runner won't cut it for Chicago Basin, lol.

- Maybe have a go at another Great Traverse or two (haven't done Crestones or LB-B)
In a year with so many other successes looks like this is the only flat fail, but it was a maybe goal anyways. Will bump it up for next year.

- Keep my eyes open for opportunities to team up with partners (old or new) for any of the above or perhaps a repeat that can be pitched in an appealing manner
Another very successful goal - I've continued to de-hermitize myself, and remain open to partnering with old and new partners alike!

- Bonus Goal: Lap 2 on the 14ers
Won't finish this year but have officially started Lap 2 on the 14ers with Red Cloud, Sunshine, Missouri, Huron and Holy Cross all recently getting summit #2 completed. Leaves 19 more to complete Lap 2 (not in any hurry but it's on the radar and open to teaming up with folks still working on lap 1).

I won't post the whole list, but here's a link if anyone is interested:

https://www.summitpost.org/2023-trip-log/1074546

https://www.summitpost.org/2023-wish-list/1073362

It was a good year.

Some highlights:

Hoyop-Hoyapan Caves in Philippines in January.
Finishing the 14ers with Sunlight Peak in August.
Mount Ararat and Suphan Dagi in Turkey in October; both have been on my list for a very long time.
Nahuel Huapi Traverse, climbing in Patagonia, and Tronador in November/December; all three have been on my list for a very long time.
Climbing at Red Rocks in Nevada; something that has been on the list for a long time.

Some disappointments:

I didn't get West Canyon or the Grand Teton, a canyon and climb that I really hoped to do in 2024. I also failed miserably in meeting the rock tower goal.

Generic Goals for 2023

Final totals:

Total Hiking, Climbing, and Canyoneering Days = 320: Ended with 349. Goal Exceeded.
Total Days Hiking, Climbing, Canyoneering, and Biking Days = 350: Ended with 349. So close.
Summits Climbed = 150: Ended with 200. Goal exceeded.
New Summits Climbed = 60: Ended with 98. Goal exceeded.
States to Climb Summits in = 6: Ended with 5. Pretty close I guess, but I wish I got another one. Colorado, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Nevada were the states I hiked or climbed in.
Countries to Climb Summits in = 3: Ended with 5. Goal exceeded. USA, Philippines, Turkey, Chile, and Argentina were the countries I hiked and climbed in.
Rock Towers/Technical Buttes = 10: Ended with 2. This is a lot fewer than I hoped to do. I hope I can find more partners for 2024.
Technical Rock or Ice Routes = 30: Ended with 44. Goal exceeded.
Gym Climbing Days = 30: Ended with only 2, but I got more outdoor climbs than expected.
Technical Canyons = 30: Ended with 28. Pretty close, but I was away from the canyon country for too long due to work.
Biking Days = 30: Ended with 0. I certainly hope to do better in 2024.
Lose Weight in lbs. = 20 (currently at 268): Ended with 5 lbs. Disappointing for sure.

Approximately 2427 miles hiked and 768,000 feet elevation gain.
I'm old, slow and fat. Unfortunately, those are my good qualities.

-Hike /trail run 200 miles and 75,000 vertical feet: 325 miles and 87,000 vertical feet
-2500 mi on the bike (lots of commuting to/from work): 3820 mi, accrued almost entirely by going to and from my job. There were several below zero mornings, including one where it was -13F with 7 inches of snow. On those mornings, I wore all of the clothes I would normally bring with me for winter in the mountains, including boots, snow pants, mittens, and gaiters, which made it possible to ride in those temperatures. About halfway through the winter I also discovered the joy of heated socks. But I did need to deal with chilblains on my feet for several months until the weather got warmer.
-Climb at least one couloir/snow gully this spring: I climbed Boudoir on Horseshoe in May. And ScottP and I climbed about three quarters of a couloir on the south side of Ervin Peak later that month, but had to turn around due to poor snow conditions in the upper couloir.
-Keep rock climbing in the gym and outside: I was pretty consistent going to the gym 1-2 times per week. I only got outside a few times though.
-Get lead certified in the gym and do some easy leads there: Passed my lead test and have so far led up to 5.9. I'm happy staying in the 5.6-5.9 range for the time being.
-Buffalo Peak (Jefferson County HP): Made an attempt on Feb. 4th, wallowed in deep snow, and eventually ran out of time to reach the summit.
-Mt. Lincoln (Park County HP): Yes, July 29. Thankful to John for opening the route.
-Mt. Marcy (NY HP): Yes, June 27. This is a great hike and I'd highly recommend it if you're in the area.
-Mt. Alice (Highest remaining Boulder County ranked peak for me): nope. Interestingly, lidar moved the summit into Grand county. Still want to do it though.
-West Buffalo Peak (Buffalo Peaks Wilderness HP): Yes, July 1.
-Clark Peak (Jackson County, Rawah Wilderness, and Routt NF HP): nope. It's a long drive and I exhausted my limited tolerance for long drives on other objectives.
