Not peak related, but we all knew this would happen eventually. Thoughts?

Good.
If I want to go back to see it, I have no problem getting a permit/shuttle if needed. If I go off-season, that's cool too.

Re: Hanging Lake to limit usage
Question is- How are they going to educate the 615 people per day to not trash the place/ follow the trail ethics? That's still a pretty high number. I hope people follow the rules and keep the place open and pristine for future generations. The number of 615 is just way too big to implement a Fiery Furnace like model- have people watch a video before they go out. I am sure there will be all the rules posted on permits, but again we are talking about people blatantly ignoring the signs posted on the trail and going up the logs, taking dogs etc etc.
I am hopeful that the permits will help a little bit at least. As a hiking community, I think we should participate in the 30 day public comment period. I could not get a link about how we can comment though.

Re: Hanging Lake to limit usage
They said mandatory shuttles (so closing the parking lot) during times that require permits. So that should make it pretty easy to enforce dogs during those times. You also presumably have a 10-15 minute shuttle ride to play a "rules and guidelines" message and encourage riders to police one another.Bombay2Boulder wrote:Question is- How are they going to educate the 615 people per day to not trash the place/ follow the trail ethics? That versus the almost nothing being done right now seems like a strong improvement.

FINALLY.

This will be interesting because it will probably be the starting point for limits on other high use areas. I would like to know where to submit public comments too. It's long overdue

This is encouraging.
I was just there this past Saturday and encountered a young couple that stepped blatantly over the barrier at the back of the lake and walked out onto the log in the middle of the lake. Thankfully, everyone that was there at the time was of one mind: wtf?
Also saw many dogs.

Folks: it's real easy to comment on Hanging Lake. For future reference, do a Google inquiry for the national forest where an FS project is located; in this case, the White River National Forest.
Link below will take you to the Hanging Lake project; another link with the proposed plan and any attachments; and several ways to submit comments, including another electronic link. Comment period ends at midnight on September 21 and cannot be extended.

If the link doesn't work, follow the Google route.

Re: Hanging Lake to limit usage
They have already been limiting numbers. Last time I was there, we were turned away. Once the parking lot it full, they don't allow any more cars in.
I'm old, slow and fat. Unfortunately, those are my good qualities.

Re: Hanging Lake to limit usage
This seems like a much simpler solution than dealing with permits and farming out the shuttling to someone else. Baxter State Park in Maine, in which Ktaadn is located, does something similar, even including the "you can still walk in for free" exemption. The person now turning cars away can man a booth collecting fees and checking for contraband dogs instead.Scott P wrote:They have already been limiting numbers. You'd have to enforce illegal parking/waiting outside the lot, of course, but apparently this happens already.
