Winter 14er Books

Post by Harrison »

Hello all,

I'm curious if anyone can recommend some good winter hiking books to help improve my knowledge for summiting in winter. I'm looking at planning a short trip out to Colorado at the end of January, or beginning of February to try and bag some easier 14ers (that would be my only purpose or goal out there for several days). Due to events next year, I won't be able to make it out in the warmer months.

I feel confident in my fitness, and at altitude, although I'm prepared to hike much, much slower than my summer summits  . I'll put up some posts for hiking buddies closer to the trip, but I want to make sure I'm well researched prior to booking any flights, and so I'm not a burden on any hiking partners.

Thanks!

Dawson's climbing guides, (2 books) have a great deal of info on multiple winter routes on the 14ers. They were written with skiing in mind but have multi season route description.

They are out of print but you can likely find them if you look.

That's one of my default pages I get when I start up my computer and open Google Chrome :-D

Wasn't sure if there was anything in print that I could kick back and read through as well to supplement that site. Thanks!

Dawson's books and that SP page are the only comprehensive sources I know of. Roach has some winter route information, but it isn't nearly as comprehensive as the other sources mentioned.

I was also thinking of making maps of the winter routes and attaching them to the SP page, but I haven't got around to doing it yet.

Maybe I can ask Bill if we can also post that information somehow in 14ers.com, either as a sticky, separate sub forum, or in the route description section?

It seems that more people are likely to look at it here rather than Summitpost.

Yeah, I really need to add a consolidated Winter page so it's easier to find the Winter route info on the site. I've also fallen behind on adding Winter route details.

The summit post page used to be pretty inaccurate and reeked of second hand weirdness until Jaimie Princo cleaned it up. Really, there are tons of winter TRs out there on the 14ers.

Just checked: the Dawson Guidebooks are on sale used for about 5 bucks each. 20 new. (amazon)

I liked those guides, info is good and there are lot of aerial photos that give a good overall view of the routes.

I'll start digging into TRs in a couple weeks. While I've lurked on this site for a while seeking out summer routes, I am new to navigating the forum and trip report section. It's a great resource though!

Nice. I actually have a copy of each in my Amazon cart after you mentioned it. Whenever I make my next Amazon purchase, I'll be sure to include both those volumes! Thanks.

There still is quite a bit of second hand info on the page, especially since I have only climbed just over half of the 14ers either in calendar winter or winter conditions season. If you know of any inaccuracies, you should let us know and they can be fixed. (Jaimie had added a lot more detailed info than earlier versions).

You have provided much good info, but more is always appreciated.

PS, since Jaimie is now the primary owner of the page, additions and corrections will show up on his profile rather than mine, so if something needs to be fixed that he doesn't get to, just let me know.

Also if you or anyone else is knowledgeable about other winter routes or has more information I can make you a shared owner of the page and you will be able to make edits to the page anytime you want and whenever needed.
It would be hard to find anyone who has climbed all of the winter routes mentioned and who would be willing to maintain the page.

This is true and many people don't know they can use the "Advanced Search Criteria" to select specific month(s).

Thanks for mentioning that. I'm finding lots of useful trip reports for the hikes I'm eyeing now.
