Post by EatinHardtack »

Anybody out that way or recently out that way have a conditions report or pics of the La Sals east of Moab? Thank you.

What are you planning on doing in the La Sals? I live in Moab, but haven’t been up there in a couple weeks. Like Colorado we’ve had a really low snow year this year, despite February being a bit colder than average. Right now Moab is warming up and feeling like spring (50s and 60s) and the snow conditions in the La Sals are also spring-like. There is enough of a base below tree line to make for decent cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and fat biking, but if your looking to do some backcountry skiiing and/or ski mountaineering above tree line you’ll probably be disappointed. Avalanche conditions don’t look too bad, as most of the snow that we have gotten has either blown off the peaks or begun consolidating over the last couple weeks.

Here is a link to a website with local avalanche conditions and a couple picture I quickly took from outside my house right now (please excuse the power lines and my neighbors house).

Dang! That looks pretty dry up there! A couple classic lines *may* be in, but looks about it.

Thank you Kai! Exactly what I was looking for. Need some more moisture for sure. I was looking at this south line on, what I believe is Peale, for some skiing. Picture was taken last year with Otina...

Yes that is Peale on the right from the east (La Sal) side of the range. I can’t comment on the conditions on that side as I haven’t been over there this season (the pictures I posted earlier were from the west (Moab) side), but I’m guessing they are just as dry over there as on this side. Of course that could all change if we get a real wet month but at this point I’m not holding my breath. :-s

If you are looking for good snow on Peale, maybe try the north side that drops to Dark Canyon Basin. That side of the mountain usually holds snow much longer.

The cirque at the head of Gold Basin between Tuk and Peale usually holds snow as well.

As always, watch the avy conditions.

IMO Gold Basin is a better option than Dark Canyon as is has more skiable terrain and is less avalanche prone, plus a shorter approach. Either way you may want to wait another month or two to see how much percipitation we get this spring.
