Grand Staircase Escalante

Post by rgsaxman »

I'm heading out this week to Zion for a shortened Trans-Zion Traverse (closures took out the East Rim) and have a few extra days to explore Grand Staircase Escalante. Any recs for non-technical slots/special areas to check out would be greatly appreciated! **I understand certain places are better kept a secret, so feel free to PM if you don't want to publicly share.

Some non technical slots:

Egypt 3
Zebra
Tunnel
Much of Red Breaks
Peekaboo
Spooky
Brimstone
Little Death Hollow (it might have a lot of water right now though)
40 Mile/Willow

Other good hikes:

Upper Calf Creek Falls
Lower Calf Creek Falls
Phipps Wash

There is a lot more, but it requires backpacking.
I'm old, slow and fat. Unfortunately, those are my good qualities.

I would second the red breaks. You can also head over to the cosmic ashtray after/before, which is worth a trip by itself.

You can get into Coyote Gulch near Jacob Hamblin Arch the short way if you don't have time to backpack. It's about 2 miles each way and then down some 3rd/4th class into the canyon. Some people rope up for it but if you're comfortable scrambling you should be fine.

Was just out there this last weekend - lots of water in the Zion area right now. Hopefully the trail have dried out a bit for you - we ran into some murderous mud doing trans-Zion. Scrapped our plans for canyons because it was actively raining :-/
