Big toe nail falling off from ski boots? a common occurrence?

Post by jibler »

I had my right big toe nail fall off summer of 2018 - but only after I smacked the dead nail into a chair leg on accident.

was a good thing in hindsight because it accelerated the rejuvenation process

but dang it now my left big toe is dark - and is sore - and I think it too is dead.

my ski boots fit fairly well!

what's going on here? reading reports that this is actually somewhat common?

Thanks.

Yea, Whitney and Orizaba each cost me a big toenail. I narrowed it down to what probably were boots that were a 1/2 a size too tight.

It's common for skiers. Often it is caused by loose Fitting boots - allowing the foot to slide forward with the impact of a jump or bump. The toe hitting the end of the boot in a sudden way is one cause of this.

see I would have thought my boots were too tight if anything. interesting.

they feel fairly snug.

this is gonna end up potentially impacting my end of summer hikes! class 3 s**t with a janky toe sounds like potential trouble.

Trim your toe nails.

I lost a toenail last winter. New boots from Larry’s (who notoriously fits a full size too small).

Black toe nail is caused by your toe nails hitting the front of your boots/shoes. This can happen when the boots are too loose (so your feet are sliding forward and hitting your toes), or when the boots are too small/short.

Or when you don't trim your toe nails.

I feel like the nails on my big toes are perpetually falling off. I've had it happen from hiking, ski mountaineering and even fencing. It just seems to be part of an active lifestyle.

I just got my first big toe black nail last month. Still have it. Boots were too tight and I have curled toes which makes it a bit worse. Was painful going downhill in them.
Nail has been staying on, half black.

You're either sending it MASSIVE regularly and getting a lot of toe bang.... orrrr your boots don't fit you right. I have heard about a lot of people having this problem though, so it is somewhat common, but is definitely avoidable.

a loose or black toenail shouldn't stop you from doing anything. if it's causing pain, go to a foot doctor and have it trimmed back or removed. if not, then forget about it... it's a toenail.
i've had my right toenail trimmed about halfway back a few times now, dating back to a bike crash when my toenail got crushed under the pedal. it doesn't seem to want to stay attached past that point anymore. whenever it gets to becoming bothersome i just get it trimmed back to that point and keep going.
