Peaks similar to the 14ers elsewhere?

Post by Codyhill1991 »

Weird question but hear me out. I'm traveling around all summer, hoping to go to some pretty cool places - spending some time in Ketchum, then briefly Idaho falls, then quite a bit of time in the Tetons/ Yellowstone/ miscellaneous Wyoming and Montana, Bozeman area followed by Glacier NP and Banff/surrounding area. Loose agenda. However, I am really finding myself missing climbing 14ers and the style of hiking that I've become so accustomed to in Colorado.

Was hoping to source recommendations for peaks to climb in any of the above areas that might feel similarly to peaks like Longs, the Sawatch, the San Juans or Sangres. Craving the opportunity to strap a headlamp on and book it for a few hours in the dark up an easily navigable trail to catch a sunrise above tree line and I'm happy with either a walk-up summit or some scrambling, veering into class 3 terrain is fine. I'm sure there are a million mountains that fit the bill, but I love a good personal recommendation.

Already on my radar are Disappointment Peak in the Tetons, Cloud peak and Francs though the latter has me anxious about the bears. I'm still trying to determine whether Granite is in my wheelhouse solo. I'm fit and fairly confident scrambling but I'm not a real climber exactly and my navigation skills leave a bit to be desired/I second guess myself a lot on technical terrain.

Idaho: Hyndman Peak, Ryan Peak, Castle Peak, Borah Peak, and a whole lot of peaks in the Sawtooths. There are hundreds more too.

Montana and Wyoming: It depends on how many days you have. The Wind Rivers and Bearrooths pretty much have unlimited possibilities. Whitetail, Castle, Sky Pilot, and Silver Run are a few in the Bearrooths. In the Wind Rivers, Temple, East Temple, Mitchell, Wolfs Head, Hooket, Fremont, Squaretop, etc. There are hundreds of possibilities.

The Tetons have a lot too. Buck Mountain is a good one.
I'm old, slow and fat. Unfortunately, those are my good qualities.

We did Borah peak, Middle and South Teton last summer all very fun climbs. This summer we are planning on Granite as well as most of the Idaho 12ers. I would also like to do Grand Teton this summer if we can fit it in.
Consecutive months with at least one 13er or 14er, 88 months

yes I'm haunted by not having hit up any idaho spots while i lived in MT

there's a vast reserve of lonesome mtns out there - enough for a lifetime

If you happen to be veering West, the Sierra can keep you pretty busy...

A bunch of stuff in the Gros Ventres south of Jackson, Scotchman in northwest MT, Ha Ling outside Canmore, Whistler outside Jasper, Wilcox along the Icefield Parkway, ... there are many others. If you're looking for CO 14er-style peaks, i.e. a hike to a nice view, one approach is to jump on Strava and use the "segment explore" feature to find the local workout peaks.

It is my favorite place in the world but unfortunately won't get there this year.

Thanks everyone else for suggestions. I know the possibilities are endless but it's nice to have a list to start with!

Sawtooth in Idaho has some good ones. They are not high - 10-12k - but good approach trails, beautiful lakes.
I have phenomenal route-finding abilities. Specifically, I have an uncanny knack for selecting the path of most resistance.

Humphreys in Arizona is a good one

Elden in Az

Doyle/Fremont in Az

All four of those are in the Flagstaff area and absolutely worth the time.

All the Idaho peaks mentioned

Cali Sierra peaks.
