I'm curious if anyone here posts TRs on other websites as well? If so, what has been your experience compared to publishing reports on the dot com?
I've posted several TRs on this website, and would like to keep authoring reports, but I also recognize that none of them are really related to my Colorado 14er hikes (my most recent TRs have been about Petit Grepon, Spearhead, and the Grand Teton). I love writing TRs, but these days I'm climbing more technical routes on non-14er mountains, and have been venturing out to UT, WY, and the Cascades, and so I feel like I should probably move to another platform to keep writing these. I'm also super interested in publishing some TRs in Spanish since I'm bilingual and I've noticed there's a huge lack of TRs in Spanish on the internet (maybe someone would find those useful?). I tried to start a blog on Squarespace to publish my TRs but then got a bit overwhelmed and decided I'd rather another site host my TRs.
Anyone used SummitPost, ListsofJohn, Peakbagger, etc, to post reports? Have a favorite? Any other recs?
Thanks

Re: Other trip report websites?
There are plenty of folks here that use the sites you mention. There are also sites dedicated to the Sierra, Mt Whitney, Cascades, NE mountains too.
There are also many TRs for non CO mountains that find good interest here as well. I don't know how much traction putting a report here in Spanish will get, maybe that's best left to a Spanish language site, others can opine on that.

Re: Other trip report websites?
A Spanish TR would be a fun novelty since I've been working on learning Spanish (bonus points if you had the drive to do one version in English and link it to another version in Spanish!) but I'm not sure how big of a "market" there would be overall for that.
But who knows, maybe you'll tap into in unrealized need and end up launching a Spanish language version of this website! Stranger things have happened...

Re: Other trip report websites?
There should be a trip report site where all TRs are written by ChatGPT or another AI. Maybe Bill can add this feature.
I'm a bit curious what an AI could do with just a GPX, a few photos, and the other resources of the internet. Could it automatically find the weather conditions on that peak for that day? If it's a popular route on that day, could it scour other related social media posts of people up there to collate an aggregate trip report from many perspectives?
AI is actually being used more to auto-translate pages.
LoJ and Peakbagger are fine for tracks and quick summaries, little in the way of photos or a story (LoJ supports photos in TRs but most are short on content, depending on author). SummitPost may have a few, but seems in rapid decline and not much in the way of reports, but still decent for routes on some peaks. A few people have blogs with useful info. Mountain Project for technical climbs.

Re: Other trip report websites?
I've actually been wondering if there's a site/forum/etc. out there like this one focused on TRs/beta for the Flatirons.
I have a few TRs-worth of photos and beta teed up for a handful of routes up there but I've been hesitant to post them here because:

- this site is called "14ers.com" and both Green and Bear top out below 8500'
- this is a popular, public site that's indexed by Google
- I have zero interest in giving OSMP's trail closure squad any beta they don't already have

Re: Other trip report websites?
I've noticed the TR's on this site that earn the most likes or comments tend to not be Colorado 14ers. My TR of a random Texas highpoint saw more traffic than any of my 13er or 14er reports. Looking at the first page of existing TR's, two of the most popular (by likes) are Jay's TR on a 9er and Aksean22's on a 20er. Any more I don't even open most TR's that feature 14er climbs because unless I recognize the author as somebody who writes well or takes unique pictures, I'm not interested in reading about yet another hike up Bierstadt or Quandary or the Collegiates.
So, unless Bill is interested in cracking down on just having reports for named peaks on this site, I'd post them here because there's an audience for them. I am interested in finding other sites that feature TR's from other geographic areas though, in particular the PNW and the Canadian Rockies, but there doesn't seem to be a unique nexus for them like there is for Colorado peakbagging here. LoJ isn't really a story-telling place and just navigating SummitPost is a frustration, so I spend most of my (online) mountain time here or on the facebook groups for other geographic areas, which at least have some good pictures of beta if not great storytelling.

You probably already know about it, but NWHikers is relatively active, with a dedicated trip report section: https://www.nwhikers.net/forums/viewfor ... 8098cbb491

This is a good point that I agree with, it's nice to see some interesting reports outside the usual stuff.Tim A wrote: ↑Sun Dec 10, 2023 10:08 am I've noticed the TR's on this site that earn the most likes or comments tend to not be Colorado 14ers. I spend too much time on reddit (old.reddit 4lyfe) and will post smaller stuff that isn't worth a 14ers.com TR on /r/coloradohikers or /r/14ers. I have previously posted my full CO reports on both sites, but recent reports have included a summary and maybe some pics on reddit and directing people to 14ers.com for the full thing. This is partly because I prefer the 14ers.com formatting and partly because the reddit leadership sucks and I like the idea of denying them at least some of the content I create and redirecting users elsewhere. Plus the subreddits are good intros, but pointing people to 14ers.com can give them more resources to learn and step up their own adventures if they are interested.

Re: Other trip report websites?
I'd agree with that too, it's good to read about other reports on other interesting/noteworthy mountains folks have climbed.
