What do you drive?

Post by nyker »

Am curious, in your outdoor pursuits, what do you drive? Meaning to trailheads, camping, fishing, skiing, in snow, with family gear, etc.
(If you have access to more than one vehicle, choose the one below which fits);
I put Jeep and 4Runner as separate categories assuming a decent amount of popularity there.
Any comments to volunteer to its reliability of your chosen vehicle over time?
Also any comments on lack of reliability?

My brief 20+ year history of 4runners.

3rd gen - Totaled in 2010 after hitting one of the barriers on I-70 and bent the frame. I miss that car. It had personality.
4th gen - Traded in with almost 190k miles on it and owned it for 14 years. It lives on through someone else on here.
5th gen - Brand new 2024 TRD ORP (first new car I've ever had). Awesome car.

4runners take me everywhere I want to go and I have no desire to drive anything else to a trailhead.

I currently own a 2022 Tacoma V6 4wd Extended Cab. I had to drive to a dealer in Oklahoma from Missouri in the Fall of 2022 to find it because every dealership around here at the time carried mostly double cabs due to demand. The 2022 extended cab with 6 foot bed has a shorter wheelbase than the 2022 double cab with 6 foot bed (127.4 inches versus 140.6 inches) which is why I wanted it for my Colorado mountain trips. I needed the 6 foot bed for transporting specific items and my truck tent. I also needed the V6 to tow my 19.5 foot bassboat. The 2022 V6 also has the towing package by default.

Previously, I had a 2016 Tacoma in the same configuration but in 2022 I intersected a deer on I-70 and totaled it. Before that, I had a 2002 Toyota Tundra which I sold in 2015 with over 155,000 miles on it. The last I heard a mail person in Sedalia Missouri was still driving it to deliver mail. Great, reliable truck! If I didn't have my fishing boat, I would probably be driving a 4runner. I'm a Toyota guy through and through. They may not have the most power, but those that I and my relatives have owned are reliable AF. My oldest daughter is driving a 2010 Toyota Corolla that I helped her buy back then and it has never had an issue. I think she is well over 200,000 miles.

My comments on my 4Runners over many years are not the same as Jon’s, but quite similar in ways, and certainly in sentiment. And very reliable. (No accidents, though, other than backing into a boulder at KC TH)

Between my wife and I we have a 2020 Rav4 Hybrid and a 1999 Pathfinder which is usually only used when we need to drive on rough roads. We'll replace the latter with a Landcruiser or 4Runner when it dies. Pathfinders aren't the same anymore and I wouldn't buy the new one, but we've had the now old one for more than 26 years.

Of note, I don't think I'd group Xterras, Broncos, Blazers, and Explorers in the same group. Maybe the old ones of the latter two, but the newer Blazers are crossovers.
I'm old, slow and fat. Unfortunately, those are my good qualities.

22 Subaru Impreza base with MT. I have one more year of driving across the South/Southwest to my son's XC/track meets and then I'll probably start looking for something that can get me further up the 4wd roads.

2017 Crosstrek and 2019 Ascent my 6th and 7th Subarus. When I got my first Outback in 1998 even though it was new I banged it over 4x4 roads it had no business being on without fear. No way I’d do that anymore. Now I hitch rides from friends who own Rubicons and Tundras and 4Runners. Seems like every peak I want to climb these days has a rough road to the trailhead.
